The problem with the renaming thing is about half way through the game the nickname wasn't needed. It really only was there to hide from the queen but once that was over she could have easily just forgot the nickname and continue to be Garnet.

To be fair, she did look a whole lot better once she cut her hair. Not because short hair looks good on her, but because you could see her ass without her ponytail getting in the way.
