Not really. I do like how Paper Mario plays a role, but the extension of him just makes him another button to press and turns the game into a giant easy mode since he can take so much punishment with the copying ability.
The overworld is fucking horrendous too. There's nothing going on in the game whatsoever that makes it stand out or even good.

Yup, bosses are really hard to dodge and most bosses have a gimmick attack where you have to use paper mario in some folded form to dodge.
Also paper and normal versions f the same enemy attack slightly differently. For example a normal boomerang bro will throw his to spin around you and you need to knock it away with a hammer, a paper bro will throw his rang and turn himself into one so you need to watch for which one to hit to cause counter damage.

I've played both series (and Mario RPG). Both series went downhill. M&L just went downhill with its first game while Paper Mario had 2 good games.
I'm really weary to play Paper Jam because of how bad all the other AlphaDream games are. But the concept is so good, I'm gonna give it a try. So cry more, but the inclusion of Paper Mario characters is what is getting me to even try another M&L game.

They were extremely simple RPGs (by design) with the most rudimentary Mario plot possible (also probably by design). Characterization and humor were good, but I'd still take M&L for that any day, BiS Bowser was the best Bowser since SMRPG and every game had humor that at least made me crack a smile. That's rare for a Nintendo game.
PM was probably the first RPG you played when you were 12, but that doesn't excuse still having your head up your ass.

And TTYD hardly fits your description. One of the problems with TTYD is it had too many sub plots going on. As well as hours of dialogue with no gameplay in between. Basically, the same problem as M&L games. They really should realize that the average Mario player doesn't want to read hours of dialogue. Even in an RPG.
Paper Mario and Mario RPG are really the only games to get things right. A decent amount of dialogue, but still more gameplay and exploration than story.

But the longest segments weren't enjoyable to read. Glitz Pit and Excess Express was the epitome of formulaic and repetitive. Trigger story event, watch an hour of dialogue, quick battle, repeat until chapter is over.

I was mostly thinking of other wordy parts like conversations with Frankly, most interactions with characters (especially your partners), etc. I don't recall too much dialog in Glitz Pit though, most of it was just stuff people in the locker room said if you talked to them. I think they did a good job making it interesting, what with the mystery, getting the strange messages, the poisoned cake, the iron clefts, Bowser's appearance, the Yoshi egg chase, etc.
Express is pretty wordy too, and I definitely think they should have worked more on that chapter as a whole (Riverside's emptiness and Smorg's random appearance keeps me convinced they just didn't have enough time to work on it), but nothing particularly negative rings a bell in terms of repetitiveness.
