Cane is much lower base damage than the other two starting weapons, but has better scaling. Meaning you'll have a harder time in the beginning of the game, but that it's one of the best weapons late game.
In my opinion the best weapons in the game are, in no certain order and obviously not all for the same build:

Dude, I've seen a livestream of someone's first playthrough of OoT. He skipped every skippable piece of dialogue, barely watched any of the cutscenes, turned off the sound and put up hyperactive jpop songs instead, and was carried through the game by the chat due to his incompetence up until about the 3rd dungeon, after which he quit the game because he got frustrated he forgot all the ocarina songs and didn't realize he could inspect them in the pause menu. I was heavy armor, tower shield in Dark1/2 and Demon's. Bloodborne definitely had an acclimation period. It didn't take too long though. The bosses were actually easier in bloodborne than the other games.
