Hell they tired keeping Mega Man alive by having Sonic cross over to Mega Man. But that completely failed because Sonic fans just don't care about Mega Man. So once the crossover was over people just want back into reading Sonic. Hell it shows how insane Sonic fans are when even after everything that happened with that comic people still cling to it like it's their livelihood.

The comic needed to tread carefully for a bit after The Great Pendering. Sega is usually pretty lenient on what they can and can't do. It's why you're seeing the cartoon characters and the more obscure characters from the games returning. They can't go too far with their own OCs because of Penders and Archie basically scared of getting sued again. They're trying desperately to revive the company by rebooting Archie into something more modern comic audiences will like instead of the usual 1950s' centered Riverdale Supermarket gazettes.

It really wasn't that valuable. The only real loss was Shard and his character was basically incorporated into Gemerl. Comic's fine as it is, if a little boring from the stories playing it safe and semi-close to the games.
