Tell me what happened to secret areas in video games.
They still exist, but they're rare. Off the top of my head Deus Ex: HR, Dark Souls, and GTAV all had secret areas.

New Wolfensteins had some.
Legend of Grimrock stole them all?
>>321066793
Normies dont care for that, to much effort, sorry let me rephrase that, money to put into to please a dwindling minorityI loved DMoMM for that, it was one of those game that made you look everywhere for secrets while still being entertaining even if you didnt find anything on top of a cliff house
Talos Principle, Serious Sam 3 and Shadow Warrior had tons of them.
"M-muh immersion" happened.
>>321066793
lots of that in the Talos Principle
>>321066959
>GTAV
Where? There were a lot of places not used in the story but there isn't much to find there.

Game developers have something like telemetric. And thanks to that you know that only half of players finish game. Combine that with more expensive to make games and boom - they aren't making any secret zones/levels at all.
>>321067416
what the fuck, where is this? i swear i covered every inch of this game

In the B-world with the Sphinx go to the first puzle to your left and check the messenger alcove to find a stamp.
Then go behind the exit teleporter and try to use the wall behind it twice.

Why bother designing good maps when people will convince themselves that open fields are epic?
>>321067420
Feels ruined singleplayer games.

Payday 2 has one on the GO Bank heist behind the wall in the spawn area
>>321066793
Secret areas have to be made, and since games are rushed and made with as little money and effort possible, including ANYTHING that most players will miss is a waste and the first thing to be cut if it's even proposed to begin with.

Indies would have been the saviors, but the creators are stuck with retro pixel artstyle and refuse to move on.

Who cares about easter eggs in games anymore ? Its the cawadooty and dorito era
Movies and tv need to have more secrets about gaming now

Trust me nigga, unless you had a guide you probably didn't catch everything. Fuck the ice mountain area itself had more easter eggs than most games have period.

I'm hoping some small team eventually comes along making an oldschool key hunting fps where level design takes priority since we haven't got a game like that in over a decade. People making a title like that as a passion project, not those rainbow colored hipsters who only know how to make 2deep4u 2 hours long garbage.

I think Donkey Kong had a secret that remained hidden for a very long time, think it was the credits or something.
Even modern FPS and open-world games still have secret areas/easter eggs.

Publishers asked why bother putting something in a game that not everyone is going to see. They questioned the monetary cost of including secret areas that half their audience will never encounter.
Then they decided to stop having them.

There are plenty you lazyfuck

Call of Duty has secrets though. I remember you could find a terminal that lets you play all of Zork in black ops 1
>>321076201
i'd kill to do that, but if anything i'd leave it up to doom WAD makers, they have been doing this shit since the mid 90's and STILL do it to this day.

Croteam is so disgustingly based for easter eggs
They're based for everything, actually.
>>321066793
Taken out and sold as DLC along with all of the end-game bonus shit, like costumes, alternate characters, etc.
The internet ruined the point of easter eggs/secrets.
No point in adding them now other than to get a shitty 500 word article written by some faggot hipster playing for street cred, claiming he remembered the time when easter eggs were all over the place and super fun and exciting to discover on your own without the internet.
No reason to add them now, honestly and truly. It will just be datamined and plastered on every game website in an attempt for some queer to say "i found it first" instead of caring about the easter egg itself.

I always wondered, how many of you actually care who wrote the guide instead of scrolling through all the introductory self-wank and just getting straight to the actual part that interests you if you're stuck or just want clarification on what to do or how the particular mechanics work? I've been using guides since forever and during that time I haven't checked once who wrote it.
