>work in electronics at Target
>little kid with mom comes in asking for CoD: Black OPs 3
>register asks for me to scan drivers license to verify age
>kids mom asks why she needs to show ID
>tell her the game has an M rating and explain game ratings
>she looks flabbergasted
>tells her kid she's never buying games that aren't age appropriate again
>kid starts arguing with his mom that all his other friends play the game and it's no big deal
>"no absolutely not, you can ask for those games when you're older"
>"but MOMMMMM!!!!"
>"come on let's go"
>as they leave, kid gives me this stare like he wants to kill me

I felt so much satisfaction seeing this little shit get shut down.

When I bought GTA:SA there was a little like five year old black kid in line behind me with his mom and the dude and the counter was like, "yeah this game isn't for kids, I can't let you buy this for your son." and the little shit has the nerve to pick up Vice City and quickly proclaim, "this one is okay!!!" and the clerk still laughs like yeah buddy sure.
>>
I used to work in the media section at Best Buy. Shutting down whining kids by explaining ratings to their parents was maybe the best part of the job.
>>
>>321065782
why are you such a faggot OP

i bet you played plenty of M games before you were of age, otherwise you would only have started playing them last week
>>
>>321066072
Nah was just messing around cause OP Clarksonposted. When I was a kid, buying adult games for kids was a-okay still. My first games on the modern PC were Dungeon Keeper and Dark Reign.

I don't get why people feel satisfaction from this, did you not play games that weren't appropriate for you when you were a kid?
>>

I'd like to see yours first, you seem to watch and play a lot of things designed for children.
>>
>>321065782

Why do you have to explain this sort of thing to parents?

Here in Aus ratings aren't some weird mystical thing that people don't understand (aside from the government body that issues them), it's standard across movies/games etc
>>
>>321066481
>actively contributes to less squeakers online
>this is somehow a problem

Ratings are there for a reason. Mature content isn't appropriate for children.

:^)
>>
>>321066656
In the US, every type of media has its own separate ratings system and ratings board. While most parents are savvy about movie ratings, video game ratings use a different scale, and many aren't even aware that they exist.
>>
>>321066568
Because they feel the M-rated games kids want these days are shitty games and the kids are rude punks. They believe they were nicer and the games they played were good.
>>
>>321066363

And so that kid discovered just what his mother is or isn't comfortable with him perusing on her dime.

Now he can go ask his father. If he's lucky, his father will be reasonable and draw the line somewhere. Or better yet, only let him play certain games when he's around.

That way when he does play faggot shit like Halo 5, or CoD 9 Black Ops Redux.

He won't turn into a edge spewing filth.

Either way it's the win win for the community at large.

>Mother loved watching me play shit like Parasite Eve or REsident evil on my Playstation.
>Or Kiss Psycho Circus or Homeworld on our shitty E-Machine PC back in 01/02
>>
>>321066568
I like it because now that's one less kid I have to babysit on multiplayer.
>>
>>321066568
I wasn't allowed to because my parents gave a shit about what they bought me.

Of course, that didn't stop me from borrowing Turok, MK, and Resident evil from friends. If the kids mildly clever he'll figure out a way to play his games regardless. It's a lesson in not being an entitled faggot and using your resources.
>>
Shit that literally never happened: the post
>>
>>321066836

Are most US parents also blind/ unable to read boxes? I would be more forgiving if the ratings didn't already somewhat resemble movie ratings visually
>>
I'm pretty fortunate my parents were pretty chill about things like that.

We went to buy GTAIII and my mother told me about the age rating and I was like "No yeah it was okay" and that was that.
>>
>>321066568
The people that get satisfaction from this had parents that were heavily restrictive on what content they had access to. They had to sneak, lie, and cheat their way into it, and they feel like it's a right of passage and kids that can't figure out some other way to get the games they want are too stupid to have that privilege.

I think the Yuro-rating system works better.
M? Whats does this small black M in the corner even mean? Doesn't catch attention.
But a bright, red "18"?
>>
>>321066836
It's on the front of every game case, unlike movies. Most parents just don't care.
>>
>>321067225
Kind of, yes.

It's not that people here are UNABLE to read, they just don't think to. Some younger parents or more educated parents stay on top of shit, but less educated parents are often unaware that there's even something on the box they SHOULD be reading. There are some good parents in the US, but there are shitty ones, too.

Some parents also aren't shitty, they just don't know yet. When I used to work at a Best Buy I had to teach parents about the ESRB ratings all the time, but they usually understood once I explained they were basically the same as movie ratings. This was almost 10 years ago though.

This particular story may not have happened, but I've had similar things happen when I used to work at an electronics store. Usually not so neat and easily greentext-able obviously.
>>
>>321066913
Actually no. Just as selling to a kid below the rating age is against the law, so is selling to a parent when you know outright that the parent is going to give the game to a child. If an adult comes up and buys the game, no problem. You don't have to ask them who it's for. But when an adult comes up with a child and clearly states the game is for the child, that's when the onus is on you to explain the ratings system and deny the sale.

It's one of those things that really isn't enforced though. There used to be the occasional story of a store getting fined and the employee in question being fired, but it was extremely rare. Nowdays with CoD and the like being bought primarily for kids anyways, no-one bothers since it means missed sales.

I don't know how it works in Burgerland, but the UK a purchase from a store is legally considered an 'invitation to treat' which means that any store can refuse service for any reason.

Considering the similarities between US & UK common law I wouldn't be surprised if there's something similar there.

WRONG BITCH

http://www.esrb.org/retailers/faq.aspx
>Is it illegal to sell or rent M (Mature) or AO (Adults Only) rated games to customers under 17 and 18 years of age respectively?
>A ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011 found that video games are a constitutionally-protected form of expression, and that laws restricting their sale or rental based upon violent content are unconstitutional.
It's just store policy, not the law.

All the major ones do, though, and are regularly secret-shopped to ensure compliance.

OP here

It's tiring to have to teach these baby boomer tech illiterates about games. They're everywhere right now buying games that are on Xmas lists, and the other day this woman came in asking to buy Minecraft. I asked which system and she was all like "oh gosh I don't know I don't know anything about these things I like to read books for goodness sake".

Unfortunately there's alot of older people out there who are stuck in the stone age and think games are only for children or basement dwellers (albeit many of whom browse here).

I told her which systems have Minecraft and she was so dead set on buying the cheapest Xbox 360 CONSOLE and a copy of 360 Minecraft, I eventually talked her into reconsidering since it's an old gen console now and would be stupid to buy at this point.

I have so many more stories, each are painful trying to explain tech to boomers.

If you were born a little faggot, seeing a nipple or some fake gore in a video game isn't going to change that. My parents understood that, and that's why my father would bring home games like Mortal Kombat regularly. Sheltering kids from entertainment that do absolutely no damage will give them a warped perspective of the world when they finally come of age. It also enables faggots like OP to abuse their of power as a cashier to deny a kid a fucking video game. If your kid cannot handle fantasy violence, they are going to be fucked from the start, regardless.

I worked in a target electronics from 2008 - 2014, which included the gigantic fucking Wii craze. At one point, Wii consoles were dangerous to carry around the store, because you felt like you'd get jumped for it.

One time, before the holidays, I was selling the last console in the store to some mom, and I was sliding the thing into a plastic bag... The Wii boxes had a weird serrated edge on the cardboard, and it slashed my palm open and I got blood all over the box. I apologized profusely, but the mom didn't care at all, she was terrified I was gonna tell her she couldn't buy it anymore.

Same shit happened with the Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Sports Resort. People were retarded.
