Punished was probably going to be his title early in development but later Kojima settled on Venom to fit with the V theme. but a lot of people got introduced to the character as Punished so Kojma added it to his name in the credits.

MGSV was all about pushing boundaries, pushing what a Metal Gear game is, pushing the concept of Big Boss' legend, pushing Kojima creatively by forcing him to cut back on lengthy exposition scenes and have a consistent camera, etc. i think that kind of saves it from being a complete disaster, because if nothing else you can respect Kojima for trying so hard. it's honestly refreshing in the era of AAA yearly sequels being shit out with no effort that aren't any different from the last installment.

i think it's one of the greatest pitfalls of the game. all of the highly crafted linear segments are superb. it's all the boring ass open world "go extract faceless dude no 25315" stuff that's awful. which is even more sad considering Ground Zeroes got it right. the side-ops had some rewarding story to go with them, but a majority of Phantom Pain is filler and you don't even get the interesting story because it always boils down to "boss we got a job, stuff is happening and we don't know why, oh by the way it was cipher lol"
