I'm inclined to agree with you.
I liked 2 the most as a kid but there's something special about the first one (and i didn't even play that one until 2 years ago so I don't think it's nostalgia). Maybe a more cohesive world/ "lore". It's not much, but the other two games feel like random levels just strewn about. Then again, 2 is fucking GOAT.

Spyro 1 gave it a solid start with great platforming and a nice difficulty level, but I feel lacked some of the things that made the other games good (NPCs, missions etc
Spyro 2 basically took Spyro and revamped it, adding fun elements and more diverse levels, Sparx's treasure tracking was a godsend as well. Having more stuff to do in each level was super nice
Spyro 3 is basically a polished version of Spyro 2. Didn't add much in terms of gameplay except the other characters which I feel werent used to their full potential (except Sheila)
Id rate it 3 > 2 > 1 , 3 winning because I like the music just a little bit better, as 2's music felt like remixes of 1

Ripto's Rage did a pretty good job at expanding upon everything that the first one did. Asides from some really retarded orb missions, the game did a better job at adding new content than 3 because it's actually consistent with the core gameplay unlike YotD.
