They are both using Opus, you nit. Granted, the server has to have rooms created that are using that specific codec, or at least allow you to choose Opus.

The server I've been squatting in for years has the settings to default to Opus at "quality 6" (5.71KiB/s) for new channels. Only allows us to slide it up to "quality 7" (6.20KiB/s). Good enough for me, I'm not the one paying for the server.

I can't blame them though. Convincing normal people that Skype sucks is difficult.

My only real complaint is the lack of a minimalist UI like Mumble has. The whole thing is really large but Discord's still in alpha/beta whatever apparently so I'm hoping they'll add more options in the future.

My only real complaint with Skype is how you cannot remove the ads anymore. I don't think resource usage is really a complaint in 2015/6 unless you're a third worlder, since most people don't run on toasters anymore.
That being said though I like discord. Mumble's pretty great too.
Personally think Teamspeak's UI is a garbage mess but that's just me, plus running Overwolf fucks with my PC for some reason whereas Discord & Mumble have their in-game overlays built in without that add-on bullshit.

Discord has plans to implement screensharing sometime next year. It's on their list of 'to do' things, after the overlay.

It is literally made of the ashes of Adolf Hitler.

A proper voice server is like 1$/€/£/cat per month. Are you really that cheap?

The issue with communication software is that, ultimately, they can only be worth as much as how many people are using them.

Protips.

>Make a .reg file that disables every non-crucial windows service.
You can go to Black Viper's website to figure out which ones you need and which ones you don't, there's also a .reg file creation tool there. Really handy website. Put the entries in and restart before youre about to have a long gaming session. I have about 7 services running while I game and the windows default is around 20-25 services that all eat up substantial amounts of RAM.

>Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Turn Windows features on or off
Turn off everything here except for .NET frameworks, this will save you RAM.

>Computer, Properties, Advanced System Settings, Performance Settings
Disable everything except for smooth edges of screen fonts. This will save you some VRAM.

*if you don't have an SSD*
>Computer, manage, device manager, right click your HD and go to properties and then go to the policies tab and tick "turn off windows write cache buffer"
>Go to computer, right click your C: drive and go to properties, deselect "Allow files to have it's contents indexed"
>Short stroke your HDD and put your games on the fast sector
>Defrag regularly
Doing this will speed up your HDD tremendously.

>Open task manager and kill explorer.exe, use "new task" to launch your game or to re-launch explorer.exe when you need it
This will save you a pretty substantial amount of RAM while gaming.
You're welcome. This is especially useful for NEETs like myself who can't afford to upgrade their toasters. I am running a 560ti, i5 2500k with 4gb of RAM and I can play The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 on Ultra at 1080p with these tweaks.

I rent a 20 slot teamspeak 3 server for my m8s for $3.74 aud a month.

It's bretty good but I don't get access to the file sharing and I wish the text chat was better. We tried Discord but the voice quality was worse so we didn't switch.

It'd be nice if teamspeak was still updated but all we get are small bugfixes or stupid shit like overwolf.

Skype adjusts to your bandwidth. If you have bad sound that means you have a shitty connection. If you live in Finland/Sweden you'll have crystal clear sound, if you live in some shithole like Somalia or the US you won't.

It's a massive resource hog, the audio codecs are terrible, having a person within a call host it is not suitable for gaming, and it's owned by Microsoft now.

whats wrong with the steam voice chat? I am serious
>>
>>321052762
Ok, but it's true though. Of course, what counts is the bandwidth all the way to the nearest Skype server. So if you are on a bad network you might be better off with a private server.
Or you could switch provider.

They must be having some pretty terrible bandwidth for those then.

Regardless. I can go through all that hassle (and more due to ads, spying, the UI, etc.) or just use proper software. TS3 with Opus is at that level of quality where I just stop looking for anything better.

I removed the ads which was 2 minutes of googling and 1 minute of editing files. Now I just press the little phone icon, no hassle really.

Spying? If Microsoft wants to listen in while me and friends play starcraft 2 then fine. Honestly I think the risk of spying is greater on a rented teamspeak server (of course not on a self-paced one).

... Totally ignoring that I pointed out that you can be spied on in teamspeak too.
But to the point: no, I really don't care unless there is a Microsoft employee who spies in order to cheat. I do care about other instances of spying, but when I am plotting to overthrow a corrupt government I won't fucking use Skype. Nor any other voip that I haven't written myself.

That's sort of why I like discord really.
I have some friends that hate trying new things and installing shit, so I just tell them to click a fucking link and have them join my discord when I want to voip with them through their browser.

It's no hassle whatsoever and it takes just a few seconds.
If you have friends that won't even open a link in their browser for you, consider finding new friends.
>>
>>321054227
I don't know too much about the audio codecs but when we tried out discord we noticed a difference right away. I would definitely recommend swapping to Discord if you still use Skype.

By default all new channels on Teamspeak are set to Opus voice with the quality set to 6 which I think is what Discord uses, we set ours to 10 on Teamspeak and you can tell the difference.

PTT is fine as long as you don't have a fucking shitty microphone and are using some software other than skype where you can actually configure the voice activation. If my $30 headset has a normal microphone that never turns on unless I talk, then so can yours. If there's any loud noises in the background I just quickly press the mute hotkey and it's done.
How the fuck do you play with having one finger and key busy msot of the time because you need to say something in the call
