And the game uses various different bits as humor. I'll admit it has humor that can come off as random and wacky, but that's not the focus of the game. There are plenty of parts where it seems calm, quiet, and atmospheric. The Waterfall in particular had this especially, and while the Temmie village was there, it was a hidden area that most would likely miss without help or without knowing its already there. It was a humorous distraction from the more serious events taking place in the game around that moment.
I'm not saying there isn't that kind of humor in the game, but that its not the focus. Its not a LE WACKY LOL game. Otherwise it'd be detrimental to the main focus and themes of the game, which revolved around the idea that one's actions have consequences. It'd lack a clear focus, which I'd argue it didn't. That the humor was a distraction from the more serious themes, or that the humor was used to help with characterization. It wasn't the focus.

While in the end this is all the interpretation of a person's posts on social media, I was under the impression that he simply stated that to mean "I want people who would otherwise be unhappy with something due to popularity to try this before such inevitably occurs"

I suppose that's arguable, but I don't feel that way. I would like to hear your thoughts on why, with a deeper explanation if you're willing. I brought up the Waterfall because I felt that it was the most lonely, atmospheric part of the game. The dark, black and blue color palette along with the lack of people and mellow track that played helped create a cold, lonely atmosphere. This, paired with plants and signs that told tales of what once was and people's hopes and dreams also helped pass a bit of guilt and fear onto the player, as it showed that the player's existence was a threat to even those with good intentions and feelings. Did that not come off strongly, even with the bits of humor, such as the inclusion of Temmie village as an extra in that area? It was a distraction, sure, but right after leaving that village you're back to the coldness of the place.
And then, disregarding places that mostly held onto such atmosphere for strength, I'd argue that the humor helped characterization to some degree.Alphys in particular held this the strongest,as (1/2)

Story in a video game importance wise depends on the game. I do not believe a porn comparison is accurate or appropriate because porn is a far more specific sub section of film and porn vidya exists.
Video games are much broader, encompassing much larger sections of interests, niches, and genres. Some video games may have story as something that is very important. JRPGs in particular usually make it the primary concern. On the other hand, character action games must very especially have a large emphasis on cuhrayzee combat, giving the player a large selection of options in combat. Open-world games probably should have their focus on worldbuilding, making sure above all else that the player can immerse themselves in the game world and believe they are truly a part of that universe.
That anon that shat on Rocket League for characterization is just shitposting, but story and characters can hold some importance, use, and fuction in vidya.
