How do I get better at multitasking? Are Microsoft RTS games like this good for training that?

Eitherway, AOE2 thread because I rarely see it discussed

were the african kingdoms actually shown in this expansion black?

How much does the Ethiopian civ bonus (+100 food/gold on age up) change their build orders? I heard it can make for some extremely speedy castle rushes.

A plethora of other civs were also buffed too. Franks have good cav all around instead of just Knights, and the FE civs also got good buffs. Indians were completely re-worked.

Idle villager and TC shortcuts are your friend, HD Edition should bind them to Mouse 4/5 by default on a five-button mouse

>berbers
camel archer. anti-cav archer
team bonus gives everyone the genitour, a cav skirmisher

>portugese
organ gun: only UU siege in the game, fires hand canoneer or if you prefer, cobra car bullets in a fan pattern
caravel: sea scorpion with an attack bonus vs the galley line

other new units that aren't UU include:

fire galley and demolition raft: feudal combat now gives you ships that aren't galleys
siege tower: only use so far seems to be loading it up with trash (up to 10) for gotta-go-fast mode, so you can try using it in conjunction with swordsmen line or UUs like huskarls/shotels for fast raids

>>
>>321028880
Just practice. It's overwhelming at first, but once you get used to it, you'll be jumping around the map with your units binded to group numbers.
Also, like the previous posts said, it's a good to have an idea for your opening moves. Like gathering resources with workers, placing key buildings at the right places (you seriously don't want lumber camps placed far away from the gathering point) etc.

Berber (calvary/naval) Camel Archers are an expensive anti-calvary archer unit who also fulfill the same function, the team bonus Castle Age Genitour is a mounted skirmisher with superior speed and damage produced from the Archery Range, like the Italian Condoittiero.

Ethiopian (archer civ) Shotel Warriors are fast high damage infantry with low HP and high production speed. The civ lacks Champions to offset this.

Malian (infanry civ) Gbetos are fast ranged infantry with poor defenses and slow attack speed. Remember that Malians lack Blast Furnace, but have units from the Barracks very resilient to arrows.

Portuguese (gunpowder/naval) Organ Guns are gunpowder siege units with spread damage. Caravels are ships with an attack similar to Scorpions.

>>321036701
I'm going to add that Feudal Eagle Scouts, Fire Galleys, and Demo Rafts along with Arson and Arrowslits as well as the Siege Tower are not necessarily African Kingdoms exclusive, The Forgotten players also get them as they use the same dataset.
>>
>>321037628
Imperial Malians are fucking scary if you give them access to gold. You can fire an army's worth of arrows at their champions and you'll still get only one.
Ethiopians are deadly with their castle drop too in addition to having a great archery range and free pikemen upgrades. They fall off in imperial, but are clearly a castle age civ

that's really the start
pro gamer here
really, what you need to do is get really good at moving your fingers on the keyboard. Your actions per minute increase the time you have to consider other things.
Mulitasking is a myth. Basically when playing most games its about understanding the metagame well enough to understand why the metagame exists that way, then breaking it in a way favorable to you.
Thats the standard for actually being good. That you are able to compete with other people who are equally invested is the only goal you should have.
Additionally watching videos of the best players you can find, copying them and trying to figure out how they play and why they play it.
There's a reason why chess is such a hard game to go far in these days. They know all the moves, they've studied most possibilities, its only when you start to reach an endgame of endless repetition of moves that you can even see a unique situation present itself that will determine the game.
Video games are far more arbitrary and difficult because the programming must be exploited to the highest degree to truly be playing seriously.
Like those guys who can do invisible tetris.
>>
>>321037938
Gbetos are stupidly powerful too when massed. I cheesed the last Malian campaign scenario with them, goddamn that one's tough along with initial part of the Portugal finale.

>Enemy starts with well-fortified base in Imperial Age
>You start in Castle with a base segregated by the sea with only two Town Centers and some Dark/Feudal buildings as your notable ones
>Have to make both land and naval forces while they build a Wonder

The pierce armor bonus is kinda crazy though, and to top it off they get Farimba which makes their Cavaliers able to beat Celtic and Byzantine Paladins, on top of boosting their Camels and Hussars.

The Ethiopian campaign started out with a tough one too because the attacking opponent was raiding really frequently when your goal is to clear one of three paths for one hero unit...and everyone's stuck to the Feudal Age.

>>321038662
I don't think Camel Archers have a bonus vs. calvary itself, but yeah I found them a delight to use despite being quite expensive.
>>

>>
>>321039130
There is no single best unit. It's a game of counters.

Mass cataphracts if you can afford them.
>>
>>321039448
>>321039130

The answer is, and will always be, autistically micromanaged Longbowmen.
>>
>>321039130
The Knight is generally the most cost-efficient unit in the game, or at least at the Castle Age. Powerful, fast unit with good speed.

The Mameluke can beat anything in AoC in a 1v1 situation, AoF and AoAK may change this.

Massed War Wagons can tear through shit quite well, but Malian Gbetos can apparently rip through them.

>>321039359
I made the mistake of going up north since I didn't discover the boat until afterwards. Destroyed the gate and then did a runner after some trash units distracted the infantry. Red was a giant pain in the dick though, non-stop constant raiding teams of a mixed unit composure really got on my fucking nerves and you can't really destroy their bases all that well. I played on Moderate.

Open map (hard to wall)= feudal aggressive
narrow map (easy to wall)= powerhouse economy aka booming

Why do all hardcore AoE2 players celebrate the fact that the units looks the same among civilizations? Like, you got Aztec or Chinese Two-handed Swordsmen that are dressed in European armor, fucking everything except the unique units are dressed in European armor. It's like, why didn't they make them equivalent in stats and just give them different names and visuals?

I liked AoM and AoE3 more than 2 in that respect.
>>
>>321041956
>different names and visuals?

Probably so new players don't need to learn 9000 different units, many of which are exactly the same, save for minor aesthetic details

You mean the Ethiopians and the Malians? Yes, they were black. They weren't nearly as advanced as they are in game, though. They probably didn't know of half the technologies they were awarded to make them balanced.

As for the Portuguese and Berbers, the Berbers were brown mudslimes but not entirely black, the Portuguese were KINGS N SHEEIT
>>
>>321042094
Yeah, no. You could have the Aztec Spearman stay as Spearman and just make him wear, you know, something more appropriate. It would still be the same unit.
>>
>>321041956
It's that way for simplicity, it reduces the learning curve so you don't have to guess if that sprite near your town is a Villager or an ALEXANDRIAN NAKED CHAMPION, if it looks like a villager then it's a fucking villager.

Yeah having different sprite sets would be nice, but it would honestly just clutter the gameplay for hardcore players just for the sake of making the game more historically accurate and aesthetically pleasing for casual RTS players.

Every civ shares the same tech tree but with some modifications, so I'd imagine it's there for consistency reasons. Remember that AoE II was released in 1999 and it would have probably taken Ensemble a lot more time to implement new sprites created from models for almost every unit and civ combinations. A mod does set out to do what you want, but it conflicts with multiplayer.

The AoF devs mentioned that implementing new stuff wasn't difficult, just time consuming. Even the elephants which were effectively just boar.

Officially though? I like how AoF/AoAK makes the Regicide kings look different depending on what building set your civ uses. Apparently the devs tried making the villagers black for the African civs but for some reason couldn't.

It's a meme making fun of dumb black people who think their race every actually contributed anything to civilization because they once saw on TV that the Egyptians were brown.

Hence "WE WAS KINGS N SHIT?" Is a remark a dumb nigger would say upon seeing the cover of the African Kingdoms because it's likely the first time he's seen an African king. Reason being, there weren't that many.

It just so happened to coincide with the release of the expansion pack, which gave the meme an Exploitable face but it isn't entirely based on Age of Empires. See dumb nigger on social media posting shit like this.
>>
>>321043786
>Reason being, there weren't that many.
You're wrong, there were many African kings, they've lived their life catching people from the inland and selling them for bullshit trinkets to Portuguese.

Other than that the only country in black Africa with somewhat established history is Ethiopia.

>>321041956
because it requires more effort

if you had a good designer and redesigned everything from the ground up you could probably make it easy to discern what unit is what(all champions wield some bigass sword, all spearmen have spears, all knights have striped shields and some colorful plumage, and units generally conform to a shape and color distribution across civilizations), just like it's easy to tell what building is what.

You suck scrub. The standard buildorder is from new villagers coming out of a tc perspective:

- 3+ vils on sheep with the original 3 makes 6 in total. (you build two houses art start 2 vils on 1 house, 1 vil on 1 house.). You kill 1 sheep at a time and have 1 live sheep as reserve when the other is finished, with the rest of the sheep you scout the back of your area (relative to where your enemy is)

- 4 on wood lumbercamp

-1 vil that hunts the first boar (forward boar first to prevent stealing)

-1 vil builds house then builds mill

-2 on mill

-1 vil lures the next boar

-1 on mill

Here buildorders for either drushing fc, archers, scouts or trush differentiate.

Also using the standard hotkeys is absolutely shit. Git gud.(1700 voobly player here)
>>
>>321048341
This is why RTS games died. You're not doing anything wrong, but design which incentivizes min-maxing like this in pre-set, effectively singleplayer scenarios is just unfun.

This game is about defeating your opponent. The analogy of chess compares really well.

In chess you have alot of openings, but many are less effective because you do not optimally reach the goal you are trying to reach: defeating your opponent.

so you want 1. central control, 2. safe king, 3. developed pieces.

Just like in AOE II you want to reach the feudal age as fast as possible. This means no time is wasted gathering the resources. You need vils for resources so its also important that your tc is always producing villagers.

Having your tc produce loom at the start for example is inherently wrong because getting loom means you are not producing villagers. Someone who gets loom as late as possible (as is reasonable when theres no danger) will have an econmical advantage that ads up over time with all other small advantages.

So by the rules of the game, getting loom at the start of the game is inherently wrong and there are like this example many ways to play wrong.

building a mill at the start is wrong, building a mill at the boars is wrong, building alot of farms in dark age is wrong. Because through practice and theory play has shown that you will be at a disadvantage later in the game against someone who is.

It's not wrong in the sense of playing the game. But it's wrong in reaching the ultimate goal of the game: defeating your opponent.

Hotkeys, buildorders, micro and macro are all ways of reaching the ultimate goal faster/ more effective.
>>
>>321048341
Are there any guides I can read/watch that helped you/you made?

What hotkeys do you recommend, or should I just experiment until I find the ones that I like?

>>321052987
You are entirely correct, which is why I said that there was nothing wrong with doing buildorders and minmaxing, it's designwise. In fact, not even build orders are bad design, openers are always required. The thing I have issue with is having to use micro to squeeze out those precious seconds of villager micromanaging at the start of the game so you can have 10 guys when he still has 8 guys, because at the start of the game you're practically not interacting with your opponent yet, so it's down to a science. This issue could be solved by some form of template list of micro you could make for yourself, I think supcom had something like it. So at the start of the game I just press my opener9.macro and the game just micros itself. "Pro"-minded players don't need anything like this of course, but for the more casual players it's more enjoyable to lose because your barracks was in the wrong place or because he microed his army more efficiently, not because you assigned your berry bush guys 2 seconds too slowly and the food disparity spiraled out of control.

Depends, if you're good at micro managing, you could try streaming and make sure they don't fucked over (watch out of skirmishers, or your opponents own archers). Otherwise, you might want to wait for a group (around 10, then just reinforce them from your base with waypoint)
Not really a big fan of rush strategies truth be told.
