I don't think the Gameplay improved in any significant areas. Honestly It was a little worse than the first, IMO.
And a strange complaint, but the game was too long and kind of overstayed its welcome. Especially with all the backtracking.
So good I replayed it three times just to 100% it.
Been doing a LP of this game personally, lot of neat open-ended design in the game that makes it stand out better than the original. Shame no one else has been able to capture the magic like this series has.

Hardmode really doesn't seem all that fun honestly, its just an HP buffer so you're doing the same tactics but longer.
