so im replaying FFXIII for the first time in years and I want to bring up some things I noticed
The beginning is quite literally FFVII

XIII is the only Final Fantasy game i've ever played. I enjoyed it, felt like a lot of grinding was required though so that stopped me from really 'liking' the game.

I personally started enjoying it around the part when you finally get Paradigms, and more and more as the choices and party size grew up. At 20h mark, you already have most of the features available, and I was totally hooked.
The sequels have way better pacing and also fix several issues of the original, partly because they treat the original XIII as their own "tutorial".

Dude, you need to actually see how Lightning is developed as a character because it's good. Too many times I've seen games or even movies where they try to hide a character's flat 1 dimensional personality with some form of likeable quirk. It's really annoying and easy to point out.

I believe that is basically the obligatory reference to FF7. FF8 did this by going even more into the love romance stuff. FF9 makes reference to Cloud and Sephiroth in a shop. FF10's entire design is a reference to Midgar section. FF12 had Gilgamesh pull out Cloud Strife's sword.
Hell, FF15's enemy country features the name "Nefiheim" as a reference to FF7. The demo alone references the Yellow car Zack and Cloud take in FF7.

Not that guy, but Lightning, Sazh, Fang and Hope were very well developed characters with actual arcs.
Snow and Vanille were poorly developed. RPG logic though. 1-2 characters in the main cast people aren't going to like. It happens to even the best of the best.

Lightning is Cloud if Cloud wasn't emotionally broken and was more open about himself. Sazh is like a chill average everyman part of the story, however he seems to have some secrets of his own. He knows too much. Vanille is endearing in just how positive she tries to be. Even when she's hurting inside, she tries her best to keep others standing strong.

No she;'s not. They have the same archtype, but they are different.
Cloud is a smart aleck, he has identity issues, he has tragic romances, and has to sort though an amnesiac past in order to find himself.
Lightning is far easier to anger, is overprotective around younger characters, has issues of under-confidence towards leadership and learns how to become more of a team player.

The reason Snow and Vanille got less development than they should have is because their development was linked with other characters, Hope and Fang.
Hope's development way overshadowed Snow's because all Snow learned was he needs to step back sometimes. Nothing major. Vanille basically learned the same thing Fang did, she was just less likeable when you compare the two. You could also argue any outside development she had was overshadowed by Sazh's as well.
It wasn't that the two had bad development, it was that they developed right beside other characters that were more likable/releatable.

XIII-2 was better in XIII in pretty much every way desu senpai. The only thing that bothered me was the 3 monster limit, I know it was ultimately more freedom considering the number of monsters, but I still liked the option of having every paradigm combination possible for my deck.
Oh, and it reused assets out the ass. There were like 10 new enemies from the game, and half of them were palette swaps.
