Base the next region in Oz, include magic and witches and fairies. Adjust battle system accordingly so it's more flashy and perhaps faster in exchange for getting rid of xp share.

Next pokemon game takes place in a dark city region that's populated with crime, as you play as a detective who seeks to gain credibility to their name. Solving stuff would have a detective deducing work similar to Phoenix wright, analyzing peoples actions, events, and battles to crack the case. The final/ultimate goal turns into taking down the crime syndicate that runs the entire infrastructure of the city through the heavily corrupted president.

But to answer your question, they could put actual effort into the game instead of phoning it in because anything with pokemon on it will sell regardless of quality.

X and Y having character customization was a great idea. And knowing gamefreak and good ideas, they will toss it next game.
I think gen 6 is a good example of how much they should be changing eevery gen. Amie and super training was cool, trainer customization was a long time coming, the shit in ORAS and it had a bunch of other quality of life improvements, such as a larger variety of pokemon right away.
It just A: Was too casualized, and B: lacked a post game facility. Would easily be the best pokemon games if not for that.

Honestly I agree but the cazualization won't change, that is permanent. However if they took the time to develop post game, make it so it can be as easy or hard as the player wants, then the cazualization won't matter. I think the key to improving the games lies there before anything else.
Bring back the Poketch, follow gen 4's blueprint while adding the improvements that have added convenience since gen 4.

This should have been a thing since HMs were hated even in gen one.
Create an entirely new overworld engine, battles are fine.
Add sidequest battles that are actually worth something, not shit contests and other garbage with crap rewards no one cares to do anyway.
Since sidequests will give good rewards and level you up more, make all games have difficulty levels.
Switch up the super fucking dead pattern for early game pokemon.

Playing with friends is just switching, switching, switching, switching, attack, switching, etc.
The game doesn't take much skill, and it's not a fun competition.
And the single player is all about building a ridiculously strong team and blowing through the Elite Four without much issue. It's unlikely that any adult playing Pokemon would die once or twice, if at all, before the Elite Four.
Singleplayer is too easy.
Competitive Multiplayer is uninteresting.
