Let me try to explain the battle system.
Your playable character automatically attacks, but you can choose stronger attacks called "Arts" at the bottom of the screen. These can range from healing, to buffs, to just strong attacks. The icon in the middle is the "Talent Art". It is different for each character. For Shulk with his sword the Monado, he can choose from several different attacks with different effects. Everytime you use an Art, they are put on a cooldown period, where you have to wait to use it.

What I did when my inventory got full was sell the armor/weapons that were underpowered, just equip the best ones that you have at the moment, then sell all the rest (the ones that have gem slots are the best ones, since those can compensate for the lower stats in some cases), as for collectables, first finish collectapedia, then sell only the ones that don't have any exclamation signs, since those ones are for future quests

The battle system is also fun once you get the hang of it. Give it a real chance and you won't regret it.
