I wanna get into Metal Slug - any particular game I should start with or should I just start with the first one? Any I should avoid?
>>
The 3D one for PS2 is supreme turd, 4&6 and the handheld ones are acquired tastes.

1-3 have continuity, but the story isn't that strong anyway so you can play any rest of the games you want.
>>
Just play them all, nigger. Also get a friend to co-op with, shit's fun.
>>
Play 'em all, but 5 is where the series starts to get weak.

5 is my favorite but I see it shit on pretty universally, what can I say i'm a sucker for that metal OST. I'd say start with 3, it has the most variety as far as vehicles and enemy styles, 1 and 2 are a lot more focused though

Should I grab em off steam or is there some way to emulate them?

This.
All the Metal Slugs are worth at least one clearing, so I recommend playing them by order, then you'll probably end up sticking with X, 3, or both.

>>321009292
4 you mean.

>>321009438
I feel you, 5 wasn't nowhere as bad as 4 or the rest of the games that followed it after.

Is this really a thing? What's bad about 5? I like it just as much as the early ones.

You could easily emulate the many console releases and probably the arcade versions as well, but Steam would probably be fine. Some would say to avoid MS3 on Steam at all costs because it made the character portraits cuter, but unless it's also a shit port then that's really not that big of a deal.

Current Humble Bundle also has a few but I don't remember which ones. Could also get them on XBLA or PSN, I think. Good for co-op with any friends that are too normie for PC.

3 is one of the best arcade video games ever made with sexy sprite work. They were arcade games so it's not like there were any expectations of players besides pockets full of quarters. 1-3 follow a context with 3 as the finale. The others are narratively standalone.

They're pretty easy to emulate. But you can play co-op online through Steam (highly recommended).

Just get metal slug anthology for PPSSPP
>>
>>321008525
It takes less than an hour to play through one, just play through all of them.

>>321010667
The PSP version is really bad, get the Wii version instead.

Like I said it's my favorite, the soundtrack is god tier and the enemies are really neat, especially those SAS gask-mask guys in the 4th or so level.
Pic related, what my roommate and I use to play Metal Slug
>>
Are the steam versions worth it?

Wanna get my fix of metal slug and it seems like a good deal.
>>
>>321010964
Fuck yeah, Thunderforce.
>>321011023
I got them recently in a humble bundle. They're good, but I don't know if my online multiplayer isn't working, or there just isn't anyone ever playing.
Alternatively, you could just use MAME
>>
>>321011275
I'm mostly interested in the stage select feature.

my dislike for tge console ports of these games were the loading times breaking the flow of the game.
>>
>>321011275
I don't have the steam versions but I can't imagine their worth it vs. MAME unless you have a pal over the net you reaaallly want to play with,
>>
Is there an emulator that plays it without slowdown? Should it even be played that way?

>tfw you never got super gud at Metal Slug as a kid
Metal Slug 2 being the first arcade machine I had ever seen at a fish and chip made trips there expensive for quite some time.
>>
>>321013167
Metal Slug 2 was also the first machine I ever picked up, on a Neo-Geo multi cab with Bubble Bobble/Aero Fighters 2/other shit but MS2 was always my fave of the bunch
>>
>>321012002
The PSP ports have no slowdown at all from what I remember. Still run at a low framerate, though.
>>
we need more of this kind of games, not more undertale trash
