The worst instance I can remember was in the .hack// games on PS2. Getting charmed could happen really fast and depending on who gets charmed your party can turn on you and kill you off in about 3-4 seconds, sometimes faster if you are all in close to each other.

Status effects are my favorite part of RPGs.

Nothing like stacking debuff after debuff on a boss until it just bleeds out. Much more satisfying than smacking it with a sword over and over.

Toxic is pretty bad. Poison is survivable, it's a little bit of damage you can shrug off until you're at 25% HP, and you can still afford to take a few hits. But toxic? Twice as much damage draining per second makes quite a difference. You either heal every 10 seconds and take NO hits until it goes away, or you fucking eat some moss.
Fire Emblem's Berserk is also pretty fucking annoying, I've had to restart plenty of end-game/final chapters because I had one of my best units 1 space too close to a berserk-wielding Druid who landed the effect on them.

Burn is so much worse than Toxic. It neuters any physical attacker (half damage) and does equal damage to Toxic over the first three turns.

Toxic has no extra effects and it's counter gets reset every time you switch out.

Unfortunately, I can't actually think of a goddamn game that includes status effects that are anything other than bullshit. Really, they seem like some sort of (and I hate to use this term) artificial difficulty to the game. A way to override the strengths of a player. Yeah, you're timing your attacks amazingly well on this boss, but LOLPARALYZE. Almost won there, didn't you?

I think the only game that sort of does it okay is Pokemon, but I'm loathe to say so. It still has the stupid silly Sleep and Poison and whatnot, but it at least lets you use them as an offensive weapon versus the enemy. Not a lot of games will glorify a status build. A couple Diablo clones like Grim Dawn will stack disabilities, and in a couple MMOs there's a good deal of bleed builds and whatnot.

Maybe there needs to be a movement to re-invent the system, but I'll be damned as to how to make it balanced.

Digimon world 03 confusion. It turns all your actions into nothing unless you manage to guess the 1/6 chance button that will let you perform a regular attack again to end the state. And once ended they can just use confusion again.

Pokemon balances it by making only one major status ailment active at a time and you can't override it. You can slap on shitloads of minor ones, but they're easy to undo.

I would start with the major/minor bit for any other system. It also allows players to build around a specific major status.

I actually quite like that, because it also means there's 'side effects'. Like for example

>cast Poison
+chance to reduce max health
+chance to reduce max magic
+chance to paralyze (vomiting)
+chance to spread to nearby party members

And so on. That sort of thing would be really neat, but only if it was a big deal, instead of every fucking thing in the world being able to learn it.

Another idea I had is the whole "Insta-death" line of spells that old RPGs tend to like. Why not just make it "So many turns until death" or even "death-like state" where your HP is at 1 but you can still sort of function. Maybe more like a 'cripple' rather than 'death'.

PSO2 has a class called Fighter that's whole gimmick is an ability that reduces your max HP to 25%, but stacks your damage through the roof and buffs your MP gain. So essentially you're even more squishy than a glass cannon, more like a paper bag cannon.

I've always loved the idea of a 'berserk' state like that. All risk, all reward. It's seldom used because it really requires a skilled player, I assume.

It could also be easily broken if the game has any sort of speed stat.

Take FFX with Auron for example. While everyone can end up becoming a god in their own right, Auron can hit for stupid amounts of damage really early with his best weapon the lower his HP is. And getting 1 HP exactly was extremely trivial (kill Auron in a fight, win or otherwise leave, Auron is at 1 HP after the fight is over)

Well, DMC3/4 have Heaven or Hell mode where all enemies die in 1 hit, but you also die in 1 hit.

Monster Hunter also has an armour effect that buffs you when your health is low.

The heaven/hell thing reminds me of the idea of 'realism' in vidya, where you know, if you get fucking shot or stabbed in the arm, you're liable to bleed out and you're likely not to function at 100%. Unfortunately in games like FPS, status effects are ALWAYS annoying. Even in CS:GO flashbangs and smoke is fucking annoying. Imagine if they added more bullshit like tranquilizers and whatnot.

Fun fact: Malboros in Final Fantasy Tactics have a hidden move called Moldball Virus that turns the target into a Malboro permanently.

The only units immune are Ramza and any units that can't turn into crystals for story purposes, like Delita.
