It's to prevent it yes; artists wear them too. You should seriously look into it, once I hit 32 I started to get numbness in my right hand (still do if I overdo it), stayed off the computer for like a week, learned some stretches (this was key, especially initially), and I use a gamepad for every game I can (including games that don't natively support it, via Xpadder or the like)
In my particular case what happened, I think, is that I over developed the tendons in my wrist from hours of ARPGs and it was putting pressure on the nerve; there's a "simple" surgery to alleviate it but I got results just from changing my habits (at least for now)

Then start stretching (youtube ct stretches, the ones that helped me the most were the one where you press your hands against a wall, and the one where you claps hands and rotate clockwise then counter clockwise) and taking breaks.
