Japanese and English are the only ones that matter.
>>
Russian/Portuguese if you want to play f2p games.

Japanese if you want to play weeb shit.
>>
A friend set the language in WoW to French and played on FR servers on his alt. Can actually have conversations with French people now. Can't speak it though.
>>
Japanese.
No other country in the world makes any outstanding or notable vidya that aren't made for an English audience other than Japan.

Japanese so that you can skip horrible localizations, other than that none. All western games come out in English so there's no point.
>>
At this point, I just want to know how much Kanji knowledge I need to reasonably read a VN without flipping a dictionary every sentence.

It's like ~2000 characters, even if you know them, you'll still need to look shit up all the time at first.

So the stuff that DJT says all the time about 10,000, with another 30,000 to go is not correct?

Danish.

>that Japanese
今日は is literally こんにちは in this context.

But fucking nobody ever uses 今日 like that. Anyone will immediately assume you mean "today."

> 10000-30000 kanji
Yeah that's a load of bullshit, Even if you only know a few hundred you can make out a lot of basic shit. Kanji is a bitch but the most annoying thing is the strange grammar that gets used that you are never taught in classrooms for some reason.

You're going to need pic related as a basic metric, these are the 常用 kanji, or daily use characters.

If you want to play actual good japanese games that aren't visual novels or strictly masturbation aids, then you're also going to need to dip into 人名用 kanji, which are mostly used in names but also appear in certain adult words.

All of this comes out to somewhere around 3,000-4,000 characters. But I can assure you that if you learn the first 2,000 and have a good grasp on grammar then the next 2,000 will go back unnoticeably quick.

if you want to understand 95% of written things, you'll need a vocab pool of around 15,000 words, for every 5,000 you add after the initial 15,000 you'll gain another 1% worth of comprehension. at 30,000 to 40,000 you'll have reached adult level 100% understanding and become true nihonjin.

DJT is lying to you.

That many kanji exist, roughly.
But what you need is the jouyou kanji, which is about 2000.
Anything beyond jouyou is specialized like science and tech stuff, which you would learn as they become relevant to you.

holy shit i feel retarded now. I never realized こんにちは is literally "this day" 今日は.
