I have to agree with OP, it really was the best Turn Based system out of the lot. The addition of the turn bar allowed you to better plan a strategy and make the most of your turn, especially with stuff like Haste/Slow and that move Tidus gets where you can delay an enemies turn. I just hate that they turned the fights into simon says with the enemies that are better beaten with certain party members for the majority of the game up until your party has explored the sphere grid enough to make it not matter.

II doesn't have levels, but it has stat levels instead, somewhat like the SaGa games if you've heard of those. Like if you wanted to level HP, you'd have to get hit. To level your AGI or whatever lets you evade, you need to evade. It's an interesting system that could have been decent like in the SaGa games with some tweaks, but it just didn't work very well in FFII.
FFIII is just old. Put simply, it's the early version of FFV without some things that made FFV so great, like being able to master a job and then use those abilities with another job.

I just restarted it and hooooly shit the first couple hours are SLOW. Before you unlock the Paradigm system and Crystalis levling system you are literally fighting tons of enemies for literally no reason, maybe a component drop at best. And the whole time you're just hitting Auto-Battle
