I personally liked the gameplay a lot more than Mon Hun but then again I wasn't a big fan of Mon Hun.
While its not as good as monster hunter its still a good game. The game is set on post apocalyptic earth where humanity has been on the brink of extinction after creatures called arigami suddenly appeared. The story follows you, semi-silent pro tag#8999 as a new recruit joining the far east branch going up in rank learning about the world and your comrades along the way. The game has a decent story thats pretty much what you would expect from a game with this scenario, being post apocalyptic it does have some dark tones, although it does get a bit weird at certain points, particularly when a certain two charecters join. while it may not be the story it will keep you completing just to hear more of the story.

It's decent, nothing amazing but it's enjoyable. My opinions are from GE2RB.
The early-mid game is terrible since they simply scale up HP per rank, there's 15 of them and the first half consists of uninteresting monsters that you hunt 10 times before you get to fight anything interesting. MH sets it up so you fight the "endgame" monsters at the end of each difficulty bracket before resetting and boosting stats to keep the sense of progress. In GE the middle ranks are boring as shit since you're still fighting mid tier monsters with none of the actual fun fights to make it worthwhile. You don't even fight half the monsters until after Rank 9.
Once you do get to the endgame it starts getting pretty fun. There are some good fights and it's a decent challenge. You can also set a difficulty modifier to further increase monster HP and attack (think GQs in MH4U). The problem comes once you start finishing your gear. Unlike in MH where you probably get 6-7 skills active with an amazing set, you can set well over 20 skills at a single time with relatively little effort. You have 12 skill slots, and the hybrid skills can contain points in 4 different skills. On top of that you can max out skills with a single slot. So you get ridiculously powerful. On top of that GE2RB has a system that literally makes you invincible for 10-20 seconds. Virtually every run with finished gear involves activating Blood Rage, then nuking the boss to death before you can even get hurt.
So expect a fairly bad mid-game and ultra-endgame. It doesn't really reward going full autism like other hunting games, but it's fun to pick up and play. Just after you finish your equipment you'll get bored fast.
GE:R removes the invincibility and some of the attacks that allowed for fast nuking, but the progression issues are still there.

GE as a whole is rehash central, worse than MH. Yes some predator styles give you thrusters. Blood arts and predator styles are very good additions to the series, can't wait for them to put both in the same game.

You do a charged thrust and the subsequent combos will still be in the charged state until you stop attacking. The trick is to not stop your combo with dashes, backflips, attacks, etc.

It's one of the better MH clones since it tries to find its own niche. Armor is purely cosmetic so you can play dressup with your anime girl without losing stats. The game is also more vertical than traditional MH style games

I really enjoyed God Eater Burst and have been waiting patiently for GE2 for a few years now. How is the hammer in GE2? I've been really wanting to use that. Has the monster variety increased a good deal or only marginally?

Skill ceiling is lower because of how OP the player characters are. The monsters are more bullshit to compensate.
Less monsters than HM since the game only has the base game, sequel and expansions to both to draw from rather than 4 mainline games and like 8 expansions and side games.
The game isn't a straight up MH clone though. It's a lot more vertical and players can switch between melee and range on the fly, with melee attacks fueling ranged ammo.

Stuff like Burst and Rage Burst are enhanced editions of the game before, just like a Monster Hunter deal where Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was an enhanced edition of Monster Hunter 3.
Burst and Rage Burst added mostly extra gameplay content to God Eater and God Eater 2, but the stories are exactly the same. When Resurrection comes out, you'll get the entire story from the beginning without the need to play anything else.
