I grew up on PC games and totally missed out on Pokemon. Are any of the 3DS Pokemon games worth playing strictly because they're good? Or is Pokemon all nostalgia at this point.

If you have a DS emulator play HeartGold or SoulSilver. They're pretty much unanimously considered the best games in the franchise
Skip Black 1 and White 1, go right to Black and White 2.
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is a decent game for the 3DS, too.
They are fine, easy as hell RPGs that use the same story over and over again
Gen 6 is a bore all around. You'd be better off emulating any of the games before the 3DS ones.
I'd recommend either of the Gen 1 / Gen 2 Remakes (i.e. FireRed / LeafGreen and HeartGold / SoulSilver) for starting points into the series, though by starting with newer games it will be tough to go back to the older ones with the refinements the series has had.

Probably not, I never got into the ones I tried via emulator but that's largely because I can never get into playing games like that in a computer chair. Not when I have actual PC games to play. I enjoy games more on their native systems.

Z version would follow the patterns of other releases, there's always a 3rd version after the first 2. Some relevant info about new Pokemon forms has already come out as well.
Also, a large part of Pokemon is the multiplayer and you'd have to play ORAS (a pretty bad game imo) to get that right now. Try Pokemon Showdown if you haven't, it's a battle simulator that plays just like the multiplayer.

The problem with X/Y is that the "campaign" is stupidly easy even by Pokemon standards. I wouldn't consider this a problem if you had played Pokemon before since you'd find the campaign easy anyway, but since it's your first one maybe it's worth it to play one with the harder campaigns, namely FR/LG or HG/SS. However X/Y has more Pokemon, more features, and a fantastic online system, so it's hands down the best Pokemon multiplayer experience, and considering battling online is far and away much harder than anything single player Pokemon has to offer, the difficulty kind of becomes a non issue. Plus if you want challenging gameplay offline you have the Battle Maison, but you'll still have to slog through the entire piss easy campaign.

Start with Fire Red, then Heart Gold, Black, Black 2, Omega Ruby, then Z.
Or just start with either Black, or X/Y are good starting points that are fun.

Otherwise just get X/Y and maybe HG/SS since it has so much kickass offline content. Pokemon is all about the multiplayer anyway so anything other than the newest is rarely worth playing

Sure, but it's not like I was starved for games. I missed the craze because I was busy with my own stuff, not because I absolutely couldn't play Pokemon no matter what. My sister had a Gameboy, I could have begged for one if I wanted to.
But at the time I was more interested in Ultima Online, Deus Ex, Jedi Knight, Freespace, and shit like that.
Remember that late 90s and early 00s was when PC gaming was in it's prime.
