Thief 2 hits its peak at Life of The Party, everything after that is a gradual descent to mediocre levels. Casing the Joint and Masks in particular highlight how rushed the game's development had become as LGS was nearing closer to depth.

We will never get Thief 2:Gold, either.

I guess it's a good thing you need to unlock that power to have it. Really, game only gives you powers and even initial rank in Blink because it needs to story-wise due to Outsider's meddling. Dishonored is entirely playable without any powers at all.
>>
>>320975928
Not him but Thief 2 doesn't have the atmosphere of Thief 1. Most people seem to hate that there were more fantasy elements, fights vs monsters etc. in 1, but in my opinion that's exactly what makes the game great. It's a pretty unique setting.

Dishonored is a game that has immeasurably deeper mechanics than Thief.

Yah but that's why 2 is boring. 1 had an excellent mix.

Any game can be "technical" if you force yourself to play it that way. I'm partial to the "blink across the whole level in 7 minutes" approach.

Not really, though. If anything Dishonored is a Dark Messiah meets Deus Ex. Stealth is just an option, hardly crux of the game.

Loved the original three. Really wish more games had less focus on killing everything in sight and more focus on problem solving like thee games had.
>>
>>320977967
Deadly Shadows gets way too much shit, primarily because it was hampered by console limitations.
>>
>>320977714
2 was great for going around the city though, though admittedly the robot elements didn't always gel with the rest of the atmosphere as well as the fantasy themes did in 1
>>
>>320978037
Even i will admit it was noticeably easier and more forgiving, but it will still challenging and fun, I also think it fleshed out the world the most of the three, and had great atmosphere.
>>
>>320976748
Thought this was Thi4f initially

Never played Dishonoured, seems like it would be fine as a stealth/action game, doesn't really compare with Thief aside from some similarities in setting
>>

I'm working on it.

Haven't played the game in 4 years.
>>
>>320978258
Biggest problem I had with it when I first played it was how different the mechanics were, as the first 2 are basically identical and was bingeing on all of them

that picture is perfect in saying why stealth games never really work for mainstream without lobotomizing them in the process. they're a niche genre that require a particular mindset to enjoy, one that finds pleasure in crawling about. even decent stealth games nowadays are way too lenient in relation to their play style. I remember thief was always strict with its "gotta find X percent of loot to complete a level" requirement.

>you have to watch Garrett open everything with a second long animation

Cautiously optimistic about that new Underworld game. Otherside has been clumsy about presenting themselves and their game but the more they talk the more faith I have they aren't going to make it a Skyrim clone or something. They were talking more recently about Dark Messiah as inspiration for melee combat along with some acrobatic stuff like sliding and wall running. Overall it sounds like they're trying to go forward with the old ideas for immersive sims rather than a 'regular' RPG.

I was also reading about the people behind it, and it's crazy how Paul Neurath's plan for keeping System Shock out of EA's hands actually came together and more or less worked after almost 20 years.
>>
>>320982104
yfw Karras was your average school shooter personality-wise

The New Scripture of The Master Builder (draft, page 35)

The Builder smiled on the things Karras had done. Out of devotion, He had invented

many machines, and these machines now served Him well. He had transformed wretched

humans into agents of The Builder's will, controlled directly by the influence of

Karras' machines. These were called Servants, and they had been embraced by those

in the city who considered themselves superior because of the wealth of their coffers

instead of their spirits. These same people had beamed at Karras with one face but

with another face smirked amongst each other and shared affronts.

For this Karras had once detested them, but He saw now their role in the Builder's

Plan. In all these things Karras had forged the tools that He would use to bring

the Builder's Paradise to the world. The Builder looked upon these tools as Karras

made preparations to put them to use, and His gaze showed favor, and Karras felt the

Builder's hands upon Him and the Builder's strength helping Karras carry His burdens.

LGS did some of the best gaming cinematics of all time.

That special mix of live action performances and hauntingly beautiful art direction is something that has not yet been successfully duplicated in modern video games.

The people responsible for these scenes were unbelievably creative and truly committed to making the most artistic experiences possible.

This is what happens when you put some very talented people together in a room and tell them to redefine a medium.

Which is weird because they did it more than once. They did it three fucking times, although people tend to forget just how influential Ultima Underworld and System Shock were, so much so you can still feel it today. And then a bunch of ex-LGS went to Ion Storm and did it AGAIN with Deus Ex.

>>
>>320984514
>They did it three fucking times

It's because LGS hired all-stars who didn't have to answer to money-grubbing producers.

The writers weren't SJWs with English degrees and chips on their shoulders -- they were incredibly intelligent people who were committed to crafting the most artful of stories.

The artists weren't hacks working in some sweatshop to produce piecemeal concept art for uncaring suits -- they were visionaries with actual talent who knew how to seamlessly blend art styles with narratives.

The level designers weren't poisoned by the formulaic redundancy of modern gaming -- they were frontiersman who wanted to push boundaries and design fresh, exciting experiences.

These people were essentially left alone to make art, and they kept nailing it until the suits stepped in and ruined everything.

Anyone who says Thief 2 is better than the first one doesn't have any credibility in my eyes. While Karras is a pretty interesting element in Metal Age, the adventures you go to in the first one while slowly unraveling The Trickster's plans in the first one are incomparably more fun. The Lost City and The Cathedral are way more interesting than any of the levels in 2.

the decaying pirate lagoon was good so was the cathedral

What's wrong with Sabotage at Soulforge? I've heard people say it's a terrible level, almost as bad as Thieves' Guild, but I never got to play it because as soon as I got there my hd died and I basically have to start all over now.

arrested and killed off after thief 2, congrats.
>>
>>320978037
I was a horrible piece of shit that only now seems better because the series some how got even worse.
>>
>>320999385
it's the longest level in the game though and there's also barely any humans. I played it for the first time yesterday and I loved it. It had the best atmosphere out of all the thief 2 levels. hearing karras' mad ranting over the intercom was great.

I think DS does not deserves all that hate.
I know it has some things done wrong, but it has most things done right too

IT COULD HAVE BEEN LIKE THI4F
Admire it, for it is not
>>
>>321001404
I don't think the industry degraded to the point that it could have possibly been like TAFF at that point.
>>
>>320976265
life of the party felt lifeless inside angelwatch, only the top floor felt like a party. The others were empty apart form a few npcs dotted around
>>
>>320978037
Is DS worth going back to? I stopped like 3 levels in because the small levels and the useless map (Why don't they tell you what room you're in like the first 2?)
>>
>>321002043
yeah it's worth playing, a couple of the levels are great
>>
>>321001404
I want to play it so bad, but I can't get past the jittery movement. Garrett controls like he's having a seizure all the time.

this thread is leading me to believe that all of Thief 1's levels are filled with undead, all of Thief 2's levels are boring and rushed, but lacking undead, Deadly Shadows is a steaming pile and Dishonered is better than all of them because you can kill people
>>
>>320989667
For thief 2 they made the levels first and then made a story to fit them. Thief 1 they made levels to fit the story.
>>
>>321002697

Thief 1 is good but drags on and the last parts are terrible. Also fuck zombies.
Thief 2 is great but not that much better and certainly not to the degree /v/ collectively makes it out to be.
Thief 3 is actually pretty damn good, loading screens aside. It has some fantastic levels and the detail in each is leagues above the first 2 games' copy/paste textured corridors.
Dishonored is good for altogether different reasons than Thief.

/v/ sucks dick. Play the games, form opinions.
>>
>>320997617
The original is night time too if you turn off fog. I don't know why the fog is retarded on that level.

I wouldn't say i prefer the old version but I do like how you can climb the outside of angel watch and theres to ways to get there.
>>
>>321002684
Mod it. It fixes a couple of things like movement and the broken creeping for instance
>>
I haven't played the game yet, so... I guess I have something to look forward to.
I'll probably really love it, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Same with Planescape Torment.

I'm actually playing through Mass Effect 3 when I could be playing those instead.
>>
>>321002991
>Thief 1 they made levels to fit the story.
I'm pretty sure they just came up with different themes for levels then made them. Which is why there are so many weird and un-stealth like levels in it.
Though I may be misremembering.
>>
>>321003486
What mod? I have trouble finding proper mods for that game.
>>
>>321003869

>weird and un-stealth

>Return to the Cathedral
>zombies everywhere
>fuck this shit
>I am become Blade, killer of undead
>jump down in the middle of the cathedral from one of the lower beams
>make a lot of noise so everyone hears it
>zombies converge on my position
>start chucking flashbombs in all directions
>holy water the rest
>finish the level in peace

Fuck zombies.
>>
>>321003869
LGS was a bit apprehensive about making a pure stealth game, thought it wouldn't appeal to most people, which is why we got more dungeon crawling levels.

Saying that though, you can sneak through all the levels pretty much the same.
>>
>>321004203
Still one of the scariest levels in any video game ever.
>>
>>321004249
There's a video out there of several of the developers playing through segments of the game and explaining that, although accidental, the dungeon crawling and horror levels give the game a better pacing than Thief 2, since those levels are almost breathers in between pure stealth levels.
>>
Anyone else wants an rpg set in thief's universe? the world is so unique and interesting and is barely explored
>>
>>321004514
>dungeon crawling and horror levels
>breathers

It was the stealth levels where I would gradually unclench my butthole after one of those horror levels
>>
>>321004689
it was interesting until Thief 3 made it generic.
>>
>>321004695
did you consider The Lost City, Escape and Strange Bedfellows scary?
>>
>>321004807
Nigga what, you better elaborate
>>
>>321004807
I hope you never find out what happened to the factions in Thief 4 if you consider what DS did to be bad
>>
>>321004857
Those monkey men creeped me the fuck out desu
The bug men too with their weird ass walking and the noises they made
>>
>>321001707

did a good job for actual industry standards

this industry has become shit
>>

>all of Thief 1's levels are filled with undead

All of the memorable ones are.
They're memorable because undead fucking suck.

And The Builder said, 'If the foundation is weak, do you wail and gnash your teeth? Do you ask it to repour itself? Nay, you tear it down and begin anew. So shall it be with with all My Children, whether they be Stone or Flesh.'
