It's really jarring considering Fontaine got built up as an actually shrewd and intelligent figure compared to Ryan. Then he became a roidmaster.
In the novel about rapture before bioshock 1 started, appartently there was a whole line of premium plasmids reserved for fontaine that had no genetic side effects, while he sold the addicting genetics destroying drugs to the citizens
