What game uses chromatic abberation right?
>>320946865
the talos principle
None of them
Also is that Squad? Well looks like another game I won't be buying, thanks for the heads up.
>>320947075
It is.
I think CA is really good for explosions, but not much else
Crysis
>>320946865
Deus Ex HR
Hard ResetBloodborne
CA never looks good. The film and photography sectors have spent decades and millions of dollars in research to eliminate it for a reason.
>>320946865
Motion blur, depth of field, chromatic abberation all shit tier effects, what else have i missed?
Good thing i like chromatic abberation idk it feels comfy to me
>Chromatic Aberration
>When you're playing as something that doesn't have lenses
Unless you're playing a robot or operating a camera, there is no reason to ever have that abomination of a visual effect.
>>320947460
>vignette
>light shafts/god rays
>bloom
basically anything post-processing
>>320947460
cities skylines is the only game where i liked the depth of field, i have no idea why people think obscuring the things you see makes the game look better
>>320948572
It's more "cinematic" and "realistic", just like your screen turning red in third person games to signify blood loss or pain
It's dumb and people who endorse or enable it should burn at the stake
Alien: Isolation
>>320947460
>>320948572
>>320948705
Depth of Field should only be used in cutscenes and very specific things like aiming down a sight or zooming in on somethin. It lets you focus more on what you're targeting and helps the director "direct" people into looking at what they should be looking at.
Anything else is just stupid.
Cuphead
>>320946865
Not Dying Light
>>320949315
This is how it looks with no Depth of Field. There's no focus here, just a bland image
>>320949315
>>320949415
Because of bad angle and bad textures, that's why it's a bland image
dof just obscures developer fuck-ups/bad jobs
>>320949665
DoF is used in cinema all the time. Are they obscuring bad textures from real life?
Killzone Shadowfall
>>320947005
This, also good taste anon
>>320949415
MGS V's textures are pure shit.
>>320949902
This is not a question of texture quality. DoF is used all the time in cutscenes in cinema to give focus. In this shot the focus is skull face, then the DoF disappears.
>>320948425
>light shafts/god rays
>shit tier
>>320949315
It's dumb and overly blurry, just like in your picture it looks like someones smothered vaseline over my screen. If you're aiming down a sight how are you supposed to see other targets if they're blurred out of reality?
>>320949776
You cant be serious
>>320950091
>If you're aiming down a sight how are you supposed to see other targets if they're blurred out of reality?
Seriously? The DoF blurs the _sides_ to help you focus on the center.
>>320950017
>>320949415
DoF in ground zeroes pc version is bugged or something cause on console it does not look like that at all.
Cuphead
None, I don't want that abomination in my game.
>>320950186
It's shit, DoF apologist.
>>320950192
You're right, it looks worse
>>320949315
This. DoF is fine when it's used right. It's obnoxious when everything is being adjusted like it's a camera in first-person, but for the sake of cut-scenes, it serves a good purpose and can fill that role well. And yes, it also helps to hide shit textures among other things, which is better than seeing them.
>>320949665
Silent Hill, especially 3 used DOF to great effect. Kojima is just a hack. I don't know why people tout him as a genius writer and director, he's godawful. nice game designer though.
>>320950282
CA only if a dislay fails.
>>320946865
The ca effect happens when you are supressed or bleeding, it is supposed to tell you that something unpleasent is happening. You don't run around with ca on all the time
>>320950705
>I don't know why people tout him as a genius writer and director,
Nobody says this.
>>320946865
>That feeling when for some reason I really like chromatic aberration even though its a really cheap effect. I think it looks cool as hell and genuinely believe it gives off an enhanced realistic effect even though it doesn't at all because we are not bad cameras on a stick.
>>320946865
The crysis games.
That's about it, really.
>>320950776
sauce?
>>320950972
Step 15 is perfect - no need for much else besides maybe some god rays or something. Every other step just ruins the image specially that disgusting color grading
>That feeling when for some reason I really like chromatic aberration even though its a really cheap effect. I think it looks cool as hell and genuinely believe it gives off an enhanced realistic effect even though it doesn't at all because we are not bad cameras on a stick.

Where have you been in the past decade?
people started to keep it to themselves after Phantom Pain, but he was the Visionary of video games before, still is, people just don't beat others over the head with it as hard.
I like it in bloodborne and what I've seen of the system shock 1 remake
anything with lovecraft or sci-fi and it's pretty cool

this
>>320947005
Talos Principle gave me nausea.
Great game though.
>>320950017
>>320949902
That doesn't change the fact that MGS V's textures are shit.
>>320951174
We see chromatic aberration so its realistic if used properly. Then again we also see a certain level of aliasing but that doesn't make aliasing good
>>320951860
yeah, all of them, for several years.
No, gaming industry has really low standards for this shit and will fight anything that actually tries to push this medium forward in this aspect.
That goes for both progressive movewatcher players and traditional gamers.
>>320946865
Any of them where it makes some sense in context. Having excessive post processing without context is just silly, such as Battlefield 3's ridiculous camera lens flare for the sun.
>>320947005
Talos Principle is a good one example because you're a robot, so your eyesight would be somewhat distorted.
>>320952576
Literally what?
>>320946865
Outlast
>>320952576
> we also see a certain level of aliasing
P.T. did it right.
It can look good if done in the correct moderation and fitting for the game and atmosphere.
Examples like OP are terrible and there for no reason.
SOMA because you're actually a robot

>has chromatic abberation
what a piece of shit
they always say they are gonna be hardcore and not like casual AAA titles, but they always put in the same cancerous shit that triple A does
>>320949315
>Depth of Field should only be used in cutscenes and very specific things like aiming down a sight or zooming in on somethin
DoF is always shit IMO, but I will give you cutscenes because those are meant to be like movies anyways.
However, aiming down sights in-game is just retarded. Let me illustrate:
>aim down sights IRL, focus and get a kind of depth of field effect IRL
>decide I want to not focus directly down the sights and look to the side a bit without moving face from the stock, focus changes
>try to do this in a video game, DoF still in the same place regardless of where I try to focus my vision with my IRL eyes
>>320959594
I agree with this. It's the same exact issue with using DoF in every other situation in a video game.
I could think of more situations where it would be okay to use, but as a rule of thumb devs should just never use it.
>>320947460
>>320948425
First thing I ever do in any new game I get is go to the graphics settings I turn off all this cancerous shit
>motion blur
>depth of field
>chromatic aberration
>vignette
>bloom
But light shafts/god rays are no where near the same tier as all the above shit, I don't know what that 2nd anon is thinking
But why exactly do devs keep putting these shitty effects in?
I have my own theories, but what does everyone else think?
Of course reasons like:
1) to cover up bad/low res graphics (especially because of consoles)
2) muh cinematic effect!!!
3) it is trend now because of 1 + 2, and so now if you don't put it in your game it means "you aren't as good as the other devs"
I really feel like #3 is a big reason now days
Also, I just remembered. Anyone has the animated gif showing the dev of a really cool looking castle/castle town with a great art style, then it being slaughtered with all of the above retarded effects. I really want that pic. Perfect illustration of what is wrong with the effects. Wish I would have saved it...
