You have to remember I'm a human being with little hangups and social insecurities.
If you don't win, a lot of value gets lost. This normally isn't an issue for me but spending the very little free time I have just "trying to win" has made me think about where I stand in life and whether or not I should drop video games and find something else to do. Like beer.

Then stop playing to win or get better. Play free for all or team. Items on wacky stages and enjoy yourself. You'll NEVER be good enough to make $$$ off it so why try so hard you stop having fun? Games should be fun not competitive.

Not him but For Fun is an absolute clusterfuck and you'll end up dealing with the shitty items, the shitty stage hazards, or the shitty players who want to taunt for the entire match.
At least on FG, you actually get to play the game.

There's a difference between hard and tedious.
Sm4sh is decidedly the latter since you're either fighting the lack of combo game (aside from 2-piece or uTilt spam) or the intrusive nature of the items or stages.
Say what you will about melee and PM but at least when you que'd them up with friends to fuck about, a goddamn boss didn't spawn in the middle of the stage and you didn't need to perform the same boring ass combos just to make it so the matches didn't last for like 3-5 minutes or longer.
I mean, this is supposed to be a casual game after all, so why is it so hard to actually have fun with it?

If you're not having fun then don't play, but if the only reason you don't find it fun is that you keep losing, then you just need to get better.
