Try FFT and TO:LUCT first.
Also, Silent Hill Origins is decent. Not fantastic, but not terrible either. It's good enough if you've already played the rest of the series.

The 3rd Birthday is a fun game if you ignore literally all spoken lines, the entire story, skip all cutscenes IMMEDIATELY and don't associate it to a certain other series with similarly named characters (whom you are ignoring as previously stated). Hard as balls though.

To me, Atlus is the studio that draws the line. SMT is cool. Etrian Oddysey and Persona, I can stand, although not by much. Anything by NIS goes right into the garbage can (thinking of Disgaea here)

You absolutely NEED to get Def Jam: Fight For NY. It has a PSP port that is even better than the console games, and it's a solid as fuck fighter/brawler/whatever you wanna call it.
It has a new and better storymode, that is kinda ruined by the worst smack talk you have ever seen in anything related to vidya and/or hip-hop culture, but it still works.
