Hey there /v/, do ya'll know of any good games that are based on weird fiction? I'm playing an Alienist in my current D&D campaign and I just finished Bloodborne, so I'm on a bit of a Lovecraft kick.
Any good suggestions?
The essential lovecraft game
The CoC FPS.I recommend reading his essay "Supernatural horror in literature" and then reading everyone mentioned therein.
Most of the Lovecraft games are lackluster at best.
That said
Dark Corners of the Earth can be pretty good if you're willing to be high as fuck or alternatively tripping ever so slightly.
The Secret World
Hands down, the closest thing to a Lovecraftian game we will ever get.
Absolutely brilliant atmosphere, heavily inspired by lovecraft mythos and other conspiracies, myths and legends. Essentially the premise of the game is that it is set in modern time like 2015, but all the myths and legends of our world. stuff like cthulu and secret societies, hollowed earth, vampiric cults , etc are all actually true.
It is an MMO, but it is the most singleplayer MMO you will ever play. I actually play it as a singleplayer game and its absolutely fantastic.
Writing is the best, hands down.
Soundtrack is even better

>it's fun to play when you're high or tripping balls lmao XD
Bloodborne starts like a Van Helsing game, then goes full Lovecraft.
Prisoner of Ice
Shadow of the Comet
Dark Seed 1&2

This sounds awesome. I'm looking at it on steam, might give it a buy right now desu.

echoing this even though i got bored and dropped it during romania
the combat was like a worse version of guild wars

You should play Darkness Within 1 & 2, those Turk brothers are coming up with a At the Mountains of Madness adventure game too. Release hopefully next year.

It's not as great as he makes it sound. It's a decent MMO but the good missions are far and between (also you should wait til steam sale and buy the ultimate edition if you're going for it - 28€ for 13 first Isssues + tons of shit is good).
This is the most enjoyment I got out of it, though.

Darkest Dungeon.
Not very enjoyable in its current state IMO, because the devs are hellbent on making the game as frustrating as possible, but the bastion-esque narration and the art style really makes the game look great.

The Call of Cthulu game on Xbox and PC is an absolute must for Lovecraft fans who want a good game. Perfectly piratable and can be ran on a toaster.
There's also Eternal Darkness, on Gamecube. It's a little Resident Evil, but with much better writing and atmosphere. I vaguely remember it being reasonably cheap, but that was a while ago.
The Secret World has a ton of Lovecraft influence, and has great writing and atmosphere as well, but it's also an MMO. Look up the episode of the Game Dungeon on Youtube about it, as I haven't played much of it myself.
If nothing else, you can always do another playthough of Bloodborne. I'm working on a second character with a different build myself.

I always hate to suggest buying anything, Tokyo is the shit and makes it worth going through eveything else.

Having cthulhu doesn't make a game Lovecraftian
>>320925198
It also has Nyarlathotep.
>>320925134
The worst shitty meme game of them all.
Seriously, I'm no complete purist over Lovecraftian stuff but this meme shit is complete garbage just like all the gorillion Cthulhu plushies and general ebin tentacles = Cthulhu :DDD shit.
Who was the person who made it so anyhow?
>>320925447
Lovecraft has the unholy distinction of being aesthetically awesome whilst also attracting people who are aesthetically bankrupt.
There are two kinds of people when it comes to Lovecraft: those that think it's all just Cthulhu and tentacles (mostly people that wear all black and use XD unironically) and people that think Cosmic Horror is awesome because of how intellectual and visceral it manages to be all at once.

Its an amazing game anon. The community is pretty great too, but I recommend playing it as a singleplayer game.
The fucking zones in this game are mindblowing and each and every quest (not including the unmarked side quests) are voiced and with cutscenes.
Protip: pick illuminati for the best quest dialogue :

The Shin Megami Tensei series is based on some shitty novels about a dude summoning demons. Luckily, the games are far better than the original source material and past the first game have original plots.

At this moment I'm euphoric.
You think you're one of the smart ones don't you.
You're not, faggot.

I actually bought this game, but am not a monthly subscriber. I never got to far because wasn't in any kind of guild to help advance, and show me the ropes. I mean to go back to the game and actually dig into it.

I kind of wish DD had stayed more true to its original pitch.
As it is the characters feel quite interchangeable.
Their quirks are just binary buffs or nerfs/ a tendency to check curios without your input.
Sicknesses are really the only thing that can have an up- and a downside.
And the only real character related thing is that abomination can't party with religious teammates.
The game as is is probably enjoyable but at this point there's no reason to buy into the Early Access before the game fully releases.

How did I not realize this
>>320923368
It's the way to play it, because the endgame dungeon grind for circles is like any other mmo.
Even with that, I encourage you to try the dungeons at least up to elite mode.
>>320922821
Like other anons said, Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth is a great Lovecraftian game. It has its flaws, sure, but it's such a good game regardless.
Darkest Dungeon?

I really wish this was a thing, stepbrother in an attempt to drag me out of the hikki life has been forcing me to join his play group, and god this game is great.

But they did. And it was awful.

just because there are deep ones and starspawn doesn't make the game lovecraftian in the least. players are way too powerful and the game is way too upbeat to gualify at all.
it'd be like calling god hand shakespearean just because of a character named hamlet

You butts need to get some taste.
IA is absolutely great and influenced mostly by Lovecraft's works.
