I'd personally also recommend giving X and the whole XIII trilogy a shot. Some people shit on them because they're "so linear" (doesn't really apply to 13-2 and LR tho'), but the worlds are neat.
I don't think any FF has a story as well-written and emotional as 9. However, several of them come close. If you want a memorable story, then I'd suggest 7 or 4. 8 and 10 are good, but a lot of the characters aren't as enjoyable on their own. 5 is more light-hearted and fun than a lot of the others. 2 and 6 are kind of dark and depressing, but 6 has great characters and several happier parts.
Honestly, 9 really was the pinnacle in terms of story. I've played all of them several times and still believe this.

Was complete opposite for me. I used to HATE and plain out BASH the game, until I actually played it myself. The beginning is bad gameplay-wise, but man it does improve and gets totally hooking by the end.

Yes, it is seriously that good.
The world and atmosphere is beautiful & comfy. Style-wise it was return to the "good ol' FF" with the medieval world + magic + airships. It's not the most complex of them all by any means, so it's quite easy to get into. The card game and sidequests can keep you occupied.
If you enjoyed FF7, there's zero reason to assume you'd not like FF9. They're pretty much carved out of the same wood, no matter the style differences. Hell, 9 even has several FF7 eastereggs / cameos.

The level design is kinda meh but the visuals of XII are 10/10. music is good but sorta blends together. Has at least a hundred hours worth of sidequests, monster hunting, item collecting, all kinds of stuff. the final boss isn't even remotely challenging by level 50 so you need to seek optional bosses and espers (of which there are plenty)
Quickenings are also really broken so you should get those ASAP cuz they destroy everything up to Vossler or so

I liked it. Yea, some parts of the story could have been better, and it really should taken a little more time so the final boss wasn't as out of nowhere as the one we got feels. Still, it was a nice homage to the older games as the series moved onto more "modern" looking settings.
FF13 was fucking bad. I've only played through it's short ass story once and that felt like a long ass chore. The characters were god awful except for Sazh.
I'll never understand the hate FF12 gets. So much to explore and characters are completely customizable. The last Final Fantasy where you're free to stumble upon an enemy in a dungeon and get your ass handed to you if you're not ready. Story takes place in the same world as FF Tactics and has one of the most bad ass characters ever - Balthier.

I'd recommend Chrono Cross, another great rpg that came out late in the PSX's lifespan. Looks incredible, and has one of the best soundtracks in vidya. Every location oozes atomosphere

IX is Loveliest Game in the series.
The entries that come closest in tone (i.e. are lighthearted) are the SNES ones and X.
Gameplay-wise, all the PSX entries play similarly except the other two experiment more with their magic systems.
XII is a slog but if you can reduce the grinding and farming with cheats or whatever then you might like it. The plot is a super serious political drama (and yeah ok it's a Star Wars/Hidden Fortress remake) but I think the writing, music, art direction are all great. The voice acting in the English dub stands out by far, as has probably been noted elsewhere in this thread.

DESU, I feel it is the most overrated FF game around here.
It was extremely forgettable. It was one of the more recent FF games I played and I can only remember 2 of the fucking characters names: Vivi and Kuja. I couldn't even tell you what the battle system was. It just left very little impression, and I remember 4chin hyping me up for it when I played it, only to be meh'd.
I mean, I finished it, which is more than I can do with most games, but fuck it was just so forgettable. I remember more negatives than positives.
Pros:
Vivi has an interesting story. I probably wouldn't like it as much now because I am so sick of "muh rights" stories at this point
Cons:
The characters look ugly as fuck. I had this game for years before I played it. Everytime I looked at that fucking cover, with those stupid fucking faces, I said "Nah, I'll play something else instead"
The true villain of the games literally just pops out at the end of the game with no foreshadowing, no lead up, not a single mention ever. He's like "Hey guys I'm really the final bad guy! What a twist!". I guess its not a twist though because he previously wasn't mentioned. Christ, what a fucking shitty way to end the game. FF9 fags, will never, ever mention this, but it is probably the worst shit I have seen in an FF game. In fact, they won't even respond to this part of my post.
