Its a lack of in-depth understanding of the game, through a foreigner's eyes, that made TSB possible.
There's a fundamental difference in western sports games, which have been dominant since about 1995 or so, and the Japanese ones made prior to that. With the odd exception of stuff like NBA Jam, western sports games always take a sim approach and try to be as realistic as possible. You punt on 4th down, you get fouled, you manage a depth chart. Japanese sports games are always faster and more arcadey. The NES Tecmo Bowl games in particular are more like action games with a football setting.
You are not alone OP, TSB is hands-down the greatest NFL game ever made and its shitty western attempts at remaking it in recent years just prove it; this includes the Knobbe romhacks that actually strip away some of TSB's charming quirks in a very western white idiot sort of move.
There will never be another NFL game like this, ever.
