I just finished the Nibelheim flashback not long ago and I'm being difficult about what I want to do now. Catch a chocobo and go across the marshes the gg ez way, or fight the Midgar Zolom? I'd probably need to level some if I were to try.

The only reason to fight the Zolom is to get the enemy skill Beta, it just respawns even if you beat it.
That said it's not bad to get Beta because it's ridiculously overpowered for that part of the game, if you want to cheese it.

Clouds consciousness is fractured and decaying, as stated in the mansion. So the voices he hears are his, Zach's influence and straight Jenova/Sephiroth. It's a mismash that's falling apart, which Jenova gaining more and more influence until he finally awakens Sephiroth.
I always figured Jenova was in Nibelheim because it's in the middle of nowhere and hard to get to.
