Distant Worlds Universe with mods is the best 4x game at the moment. Before Stellaris comes out.

But for 1st person realtime games, Elite Dangerous is the 'best' I guess. It's okay but gets boring after a while. It's bit like Space Truck simulator.

Freelancer was nice
Space Engine, although it's not much of a game
Elite: Dangerous has little else going for it but comfy and space trucking
EVE, apparently, although it takes like a month of work before you can pay for your own subscription with ingame money
Star Citizen is getting there, slowly but surely

I've tried the EVE, but it wasn't for me I guess, I don't like farming for a month so I can actualy enjoy the game itself.
