maybe rate the games or talk about how it's the best SRPG series even trumping classic games like FFT and the Fire Emblem series.
What is the best one to start with ?

I'd recommend you to start with the very first one because of its story being the best one of the series, its gameplay is the weakest however, wich is why you should play it first because if you, lets say, start with the one with the best gameplay (Disgaea 5) you will cringe at the first and probably wont pick up.
Also dont play DD2, that shit should die alone.
Other than playing the first go with the one that picks your interest.

It's alright if you can ignore how weeb it can get. But the gameplay for the older games is not very good. It can be downright painful at times. I hope you like grinding.

I've come to the realization that I only like this series for the art. 1 is the only one I've played to completion, but I've bought 1, 4 and D2. When I started playing 4 it kinda bored me and I usually like SRPGs.
Should I give the games another chance? Maybe I'll fire up 4 again and give it another go.

4 is the worst in my opinion. Took out several staple features and added a tedious grid based system to boost/level your units (Cam-Pain board). Go get 5 if you can.If 2 wasn't my absolute favorite i'd admit that 5 is better in every way ;_;

Those who decide to start with this series are previously warned about the grinding, and plus you dont even need to bother with it if you just want to go through the story.

In 3 and 4 you have what is known as the weapon forte system which instead of gaining weapon skills off of how much you use said weapon you gain them based on the unit's class and rank. This wouldn't be so bad but only a handful of units can learn any skills past the third so that means if you want to get all the skills for a particular weapon you have to use a specific unit and get them to their 4th or 5th rank. They also removed the Master/pupil system which allowed you to pass on magic and instead introduced the chara world to do both the passing of magic and weapon skills. The problem with this is the mana cost for passing them on is extremely high unless you clear out the blocks in every floor which is both time consuming and boring as fuck.

I just downloaded the DS version because I heard it's a remake of the original.
This English dub is killing me. The voices are terrible. There doesn't seem to be an option to change them to Japanese

It's a remake, but also a downgraded version. PSP version is infinitely superior. I don't think the dub's better in the PSP version though, but there's an option to switch to Jap there though.
