Bought a copy of New Vegas: Ultimate Edition and I've decided to start on Hardcore Mode.

I know nothing about this game, but I've been told HC is difficult. If you have a single solitary piece of advice for me, what would it be?

Go explosives.
>>
>>320828163
level repair for caps, medicine for chemist.
>>
HC is actually pretty east, just make sure you level up medicine and drink plenty of water
>>
>>320828413
>east
easy
>>
>>320828163
Never played HC myself, but having Barter sounds good if you want to sell high and buy lots of water and food.
>>
>>320828163

Go directly to settlements, don't go off the road. Bring extra water.
>>
>>320828364
>>320828383
>>320828413
Thanks chaps, keep it comin'
>>
>>320828163
Don't be a faggot and just play as yourself, pick a role and go for it. Try and play a character, this is a ROLE playing game.
>>
>>320828540
>Repair
>Guns
>Speech
>lockpick

These are your tools of destruction.
>>
Hardcore is not difficult. It's basically tailored to make the survival skill actually relevant, but you can do without it. The only annoying part of it is not being able to heal crippled limbs with stimpaks and ammo weight, but other than that the game basically throws food and water at you so you don't have to actually micromanage shit. I honestly can't imagine playing the game without it.
>>
>>320828504
The game throws money at you. There isn't really any need to put points into barter or charisma
>>
>>320828627
That's my intended purpose.
>>320828673
That sounds like something I can get down with.
Survival and Medicine are gonna be high priorities too.
>>
hardcore is easy as fuck. Go pretty much lockpick, speech, and repair. Thats it.
>>
>>320828850
survival is pretty worthless, you can get plenty of food by killing radscorpions and finding that woman in primm who makes casseroles. Pretty sure I lived on her fucking casseroles throughout my playthrough
>>
>>320828850
If you want to be a cool guy and make a home in the wastes in some random place, just make sure to do the console command "setownership" on the container so that it doesn't respawn and wipe all your shit.
>>
>>320828163
Take >>320828673 's advice. These are subjectively the most important skills to work on early game.
>>
>>320828850
Survival and medicine are worthless unless your bad. You only need intelligence for special get it to 9 its op. And go only lockpick speech and repair. Nothing else matters. The game is poorly balanced.
>>
>>320829031
You must be mistaken. Intelligence does not make a big difference in FNV like it did in Fo3 it is not OP at all
>>
Thanks for the tips, friends. I feel like I have enough info to start the game comfortably. Ill keep an eye out for casserole lady.

Any unique/useful items I should prioritize? I asked a friend about guns and he said something about a sniper called the Gobi and a rifle called the All-American, but he didn't really have any info on shotguns. I'm down with using whatever aside from super heavy weapons like missile launchers and shit.
>>
>>320828163
>I've been told HC is difficult
nah.
You need to reserve some extra space for ammunition, and companions die instead of beign knocked out. Meds heal overtime. Can't fix crippled limbs with stimpacks. Eating meat raw lowers your ST temporarly.
That's all about HC.
>>
>>320829128
Doesnt it let you pump stats hard as fuck?
>>
>>320829031
There's no real need to go over 4 INT before implants, i have six and all my skills except explosives and EW are on the 70-100 range. Luck, on the other hand, is another story
>>
A few tips if you want us to ruin the game for you

- Get 7 END right from the start so you can get all the SPECIAL enhancing implants at the medical clinic, they'll make your life easier.

- Unless you're going melee weapons do not pick more than 5 STR, since you'll be able to get perks to increase it considerably with the DLCs

- Jury Rigging is overrated

- Skilled is the best trait you can pick at the start of the game, becuase the initial skill bonus more than offsets the experience loss

- Explosives is a good way the start the game because you'll get tons of dynamite off Powder gangers, but itgets brogresively worse later on unless you can get your hands on a grenade launcher with enough ammo

- Luck is worth investing in because of casinos, especially with dead money installed

- look up repair and science recipes at workbenches and firecamps respectively. Some items you find might appear worthless, but they're actually crafting component for really useful items. You can make enhanced chems, weapon repair kits, explosives and so on out of a little bit of scavenging. If you're doing an explosives build I really recommend the Mad Bomber perk
>>
>>320829296
You forgot
>need to sleep eat and drink or you will die.
>>
>>320828804
Pack Rat is VERY useful if you play with HC on, because nearly all food and ammos are affected by it.
>>
>>320829304
In FNV the formula is 10 + (0.5 * IN) per level and in Fo3 the formula is 10 + INT. Also you don't need many skills in this game; you only need the important ones that some anons have already mentioned
>>
>>320829352
>jury rigging is overrated
Are you kidding me?
Please tell me you are trolling.
>>
Just picked my stats.

5 STR
5 PER
8 END
1 CHR
6 INT
7 AGI (8 w/ Small Frame)
8 LCK

Hope this shit works out. A friend told me about the implants so I picked my stats in accordance with those.
>>
>>320829360
SPECIAL penalties are hardly noticeable, and to die from starvation/dehydration is plain impossibility
>>
>>320829423
All the special are near worthless.
At least into gives you something.
>>
>>320829516
That's pretty good, but with hardcore on you do NOT want to get small frame
>>
>>320829516
>small frame
Enjoy getting assfucked the whole game.
Go good natured and skilled.
>>

hardcore mode just means limited inventory due to ammo weight and having to carry food/water. oh and some enemies become bullet sponges. you will receive a special reward for completing it though....
>>
>>320829440
It's very convenient, but by time you get it, you'll be swimming in caps. It's mostly good for keeping unique gear in top-notch condition
>>
>>320829352
>jury rigging is overrrated.
You mean fixing a 0 condition trail carbine, worth 5000 caps with a full condition varmint rifle worth 150 caps, which makes you caps independent is overrated?
>>
>>320829248
Gobi Campaign scout rifle needs 100 lockpick and you'll find better guns before you get to that point. All-American is REALLY good though, and can easily carry you through the entire game.
>>
>>320829607
Apparently after 50 broken limbs, you get a permanent 20% resistance to limb damage. This will offset the 25% limb resistance reduction penalty nicely, in exchange for 1 AGI. I don't mind the extra challenge.
>>
>>320829723
you should have 100 lockpick by level 6.
>>
>>320829587
>all the special are near worthless
Not really. For example a high endurance gives you more health as you level up. It is best to give a character higher endurance early game otherwise you lose out on health points that you could not gain otherwise.

>>320829702
>>320829440
I knew I was gonna get shit for that. My point is, the the DLCs installed the game basically throws weapon repair kits at you like candy, which essentially do the exact same thing without having to carry spare guns around or spend a perk point for it.
>>
>>320829667
>and some enemies become bullet sponges
Hardcore does not affect damage
>>
>>320829759
End is good ill give you that.
>>
>>320829759
Also a higher endurance lets you get more implants
>>
>>320829652
Whatever. Doctor's Bags are cheap. And Good Natured seemed like a waste. Skilled was the obvious first choice though
>>
>>320828627
>This is a role playing game
Ayyyy lmao
You already have a pre determined background of who you are and know what you should be doing.
Good luck with that
>>
>>320829889
Good natured is op.
>>
Put 10 Points into Luck. It's all you need
>>
>>320829607
>>320829652
I beat vanilla VH HC with small frame. it made getting tough guy easier, at least that's what i tell myself. but seriously though, what trait should i take other than built to destroy, which is the undisputable best trait?
>>320829832
>>320828163
DLCs makes everything trivial. OP dont play any of the dlcs until you're ready to commit to a faction. The DLCs throws EXPs at you it practically breaks the game.
>>
>>320829723
There's no reason to go above 75 in lockpick
100 locks are rare, and you can get remaining 25 from bonuses (5 from utility suit + 20 from magazine)
>>
>Get the stealth boy in the school house
>use it to sneak past the death claws at quarry junction
>get to the 188
>get veronica

all put 10 in luck
>>
>>320829889
Good Natured is flat out great, it boosts almost half of your skills which you will definitely use for a penalty to combat skills of which you will only use 2 or so
>>
>>320829667
>enemies become bullet sponges on HC

Anon, HC simply adds survival elements, as well as less fixable limbs.
>>
>>320830005
Trait tier list
>GOD TIER

built to destroy
good natured
skilled

>SHIT TIER

everything else
>>
>>320829979
I figure 9 points after the implant will be all the luck I need.
>>
Hardcore isn't difficult, it just makes the game a boring drag by making you waste time with meaningless bullshit.

Just play on normal or hard and enjoy the game. Don't ruin one of the best games of last gen by doing shit like hardcore mode.
>>
>>320830139
10 or bust punk. You aint feelin' lucky unless you at 10
>>
>>320830121
Wild wasteland is pretty fun dude
>>
>>320829759
>For example a high endurance gives you more health as you level up
not in F3 / New Vegas. Here your health gain per level is regardless of your END. END only affects your base health
>>
>>320828163
mod the shit out of it
hc isnt difficult. it is tedious.
i mean, a lootwhore game that make you lose str for the slightest thirst? fuck that shit.
>>
This is the build you need
>10 luck
>built to destroy
>All crit perks
>antimaterial rifle explosive rounds only
Have fun being op as shit.
>>
Get That Gun as soon as you get to Novac
>>
>>320830152
I'm one of those gamers that can squeeze rewarding feelings out of mundane and/or tedious shit. I feel like HC is going to be right up my alley.

But after it's all over and done I'll probably make another fuck-around character. I'm running around doing this shit for Goodsprings and all I want to do is blow everyones heads off.

Especially Easy Pete, that rude old bastard
>>
>>320830172
Lucky Shades. Just pickpocket NCR dog Tags.
>>
>>320830221
Whoops I must be thinking of something else. Nice catch. Still endurance is pretty good
>>
>>320830330
Not as good as int :^)
>>
>>320830302
Novac. That was where my friend said I should set up home base.
>>
>>320830270
Literally all you need is a silenced sniper rifle and you can ohko everything in the game by abusing stealth mode.
>>
>>320830330
That was Morrowind and Oblivion, right? I remember carefully minmaxing my character so I could get the most out of each level. It was pretty tedious to be honest
>>
>>320830380
Correct me if I'm wrong but the difference between something like 4 INT and 10 INT is like 1 more max skill. Is that really worth it? Whereas END gives you access to implants that make you stronger
>>
>>320830528
Yeah that's what I was thinking of. That shit was annoying
>>
>>320830565
its 3 per level.
THATS 150 BY LVL 50
THATS A FUCKTON.
>>
>>320830565
>>320830668
INT was the skill I was most sketchy about, but I was assured that if I have at least 6 or 7 INT and I choose Comprehension instead of Educated, I'll be able to max out with the help of skill books.
>>
>>320828163
play it once and never touch it again
>>
>>320830790
You only want at least 7 end 9 int IN MY OPINION GUYS
and 9 luck. Nothing else matters. int gives you that op early boost in science and repair and along with good natured you will be shitting on the game. Only go comprehension if you want to minmax the fuck out of the game and find every skill book. Otherwise get educated instantly and you will become a monster by like lvl 10.
>>
>>320830668
You can max out your character's skills with much less than 10 int. I should know, I did it. All you need is the Comprehension perk
>>
>>320830790
>>320830668
That right there was what I was looking for. You only need 4 INT for Educated and that gives 12 more per level. So that makes the gap between 4 INT and 10 INT not that big of a deal. I remember seeing someone online look into this shit in depth I'm too lazy to work with numbers. And I'm gonna restate a point here. You only really need to max out a few skills. The others aren't so important

EN 7 allows you to take all SPECIAL implants. Implants count toward perk requirements.
Completing OWB grants +2 to ST, but it doesn't count toward perk requirements
ST 6 and EN 6 allows you to take all carry weight perks
You need AG 7 and ST 7 to get all melee perks
AG 8 allows all sneaky perks
Comprehension perk makes magazines provide +20 to skill, it means you won't need to level skills like lockpick or science anywhere above 80.
>>
>>320831072
I think it's possible to get max skills with like 5 INT or so if you are autistic enough to min/max in this game
>>
>>320831072
>12 more per level
no.... only 2 per level. equal to 4 int.
>>
>>320831135
IN 7 allows Voracious Reader perk, effectively providing player with infinite magazines
>>
>>320831307
Typo senpai. Wish you could edit on this site
>>
>>320831072
Everyone underrates the +4 DT perk. IMO that one's a Godsend
>>
Well, thanks for the advice fellas, its been swell.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread if anyone has any further tips.
>>
>>320828163
I've actually created a pretty good build that will get you to 10 in all SPECIAL:
Here it is:
S: 5
P: 3
E: 9
C: 1
I: 9
A: 6
L: 7

Now choose "Early Bird" and 4 Eyes

Now remember that each of these can be boosted again with an implant, so that's what we're going to do.
Eulogy's Hat offers a +1 C and alcohol offers +3, plus with party time mentats you can get +5 at any time.

So now leave Goodsprings and run straight towards the Prison, then follow the powder ganger camps to the north east and you'll find a small passage that leads to Novac near a train station. This sometimes has a blind deathclaw in it, other times it doesn't. You want to stay at level 1 for as long as possible, so avoid discovering locations.

Pass that and head to Vegas. Go to Freeside and buy all of Rotface's tips ($50) so that in a few days, he'll have Eulogy's hat. Now, go buy Naughty Nightwear from Mick and Ralph. You now have 10 LK between 8AM and 5PM, so go clean house at Atomic Wrangler.
With that, begin the debt collection quest for the Atomic Wrangler owners, before you finish the quest, they give you a free pass to the strip.

Get on the strip and clean out all the casinos for a cool $35k
Now, leave Vegas and go to the medical clinic. Buy all the SPECIAL upgrades and now you look like this:
S: 9
P: 7
E: 10
C: 4
I: 10
A: 10
L: 10

Now, use a barter magazine and go buy the MF hyperbreeder with the remainder of your funds.

Also good perks, you get 25/88 in the game:
Intense training (for PE, but not ST or C)
Rapid Reload
Travel light
Comprehension
The Professional
Finesse (since you already have 10 LK)
Math Wrath
Jurry Rig
Better Crits
Laser Commander
Slayer
Piercing Strike
Nerves of Steel
Solar Powered (Pairs amazingly with OWB perks)
Ninja
Light Touch
Admantium Skeletal
Ninja
Light Touch
Home on the Range (for early bird)
Roughing it (the same)
Mad bomber
action boy
strong back
toughness
"Ain't like that now"

Finally, get ED-E and Mechanic Raul
>>
>>320832119
Oh and always wear a hat for +1 PE
