I just think a character should have at least two projectile/energy attacks before it's considered a prominent part of their play style. Stuff like Mario's fireball hardly seems like a qualifier. There are still quite a lot of ranged characters in the game, but a tighter criteria would keep some of them from being classes as such. If you look at the chart, Pit/Dark Pit aren't even in the mixed sections for sword fighters.

The abundance of anime swordsmen is disappointing, yes, but I think the bigger problem with Smash 4's roster is its abundance of characters with a counter of some kind. The whole game revolves around punishing bad moves, yes, but it gets to the point where you have combatants just doing down-B over and over at a stage's edge until someone is unlucky enough to connect.
