Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm playing Baldur's gate for the first time. I've downloaded the patch from sorcerers.net/Games/BG/index_misc.php, but the shadows are looking really shitty. Is this how the game is supposed to look? I realise it's old, but damn the shadows look bad!
If this isn't how it's meant to look, how do I fix it?
>pic related
Looks normal to me. You'll get used to it.
>>320823383
Is this bait?
It's the fog of war.
>>320823383
Try the enhanced edition.
>>320823383
Nope, that's how they are supposed to look. You'll get used to it.
>>320823383
>sorcerers.net/Games/BG/index_misc.php
Who gives the whole address? WHO?
>>320823383
That's how it is famalam
>>320823508
Seriously? It's almost unplayable. None of the google screen shots look like this.
>>320823383
Ignore the shitters. I also played for the first time recently.
Yes, that's normal, but shadows aside are you using and mods? Tutu?
You'll get over the graphics soon enough. I mean heck, have you SEEN Morrowind? And that shits GOTYAY.
>>320823383
looks fine
>>320823587
To be fair, sorcerers have a lot of shit you can download. He could have just named the patch though.
>>320823623
I'm not using any mods. I've literally just installed it and played for the first time. I've had the game sitting around for years.
>>320823621
Wot de fug.
I've not got a clue, bumping.
>>320823621
That shows unexplored zones. Your shot is explored but currently not in view. As in, total black vs. black layer. Does it truly bother you so much?
>>320823621
Now i see, i think you fucked up some options but i don't know.
I think i had this once too.
>>320823716
Yeah. I guess I've been spoiled by modern games. To me, it looks like my graphic settings are wrong or the game is malfunctioning or something. It's hard to believe that old games really looked this bad.
>>320823621
Ohhh. Yeah, that's definitely not normal. Reinstall without the patch, let's see how it looks vanilla.
>>320823621
>>320823716
No, that's an oblivious graphic glitch.
I'd suggest running BG on the BG2 engine. You have to have bg2 installed though.
>>320823782
>>320823793
Ok. I'll give it a shot. brb
>>320823716
He is talking about the ugly Fog of war effect.
Its not superposedto look like that.
>>320823621
Just get the Enhanced edition it optimizes the game for modern PCs.
And ads a few new Party members who actualy have new quests.
Not to mention a New Baldurs gate game is coming out so you will have A character ready for import the new game takes place between 1 and 2/
>>320823716
>>320823621
My mistake, your first shot is normal, the second DOES look odd with the square boxes. Does everywhere look like that, or just that one spot? I mean, it's an old game, if it's like that in one or two places I'd ignore it, especially since you're using hardware 15 years newer.
But, regardless, my only advice: re-download, re-install (when you install BG1, do a "custom" installation and check all boxes, including the intro movie scenes; when you install BG2, do a full install), and apply the latest patch.
Outside of that, though, if you're a bit more ambitious then you can consider downloading EasyTutu. It connects BG1 and 2, as well as applies BG2's better UI to the BG1 parts. Simple to install, too.
>>320823835
I've got BG2 Picked up a disc set with all the expansions etc a few years back. I glanced over a how to on how to run it on the BG2 engne, but it looks like a headache, and I'm honestly out of touch with fiddling with games.
>>320823910
Enhanced edition? B'aww. I've already spent money though! I'll see if I can get this one working alright. It's just the black blocks of shadow that bother me.
>>320824020
It's everywhere inside the Candlewhatever Inn. Outside seems normal. I've only been playing for about 10 mins.
I've just uninstalled it, so I'll give it another shot and see how it goes.
Thanks, you guys. I really want to enjoy this game since everyone says it's a classic and I love ye olde type RPGs.
>>320824189
Hey man, np. I'm myself about 4 hours in, it's the kind of game my dad grew up with and talks up, as well as the entirety of /v/. I'll admit its not my first attempt to playthrough, but I'm really enjoying it now. Key is to take it slow, older games didn't throw constant rewards at you for small tasks like new ones. It's all about immersion. Don't fret over the choices, you can't make everyone in one playthrough. Use the characters you like, but keep in mind characters of opposing alignments have a chance to fight.
>>320823383
That is normal fog of war for software rendering, and the first game does software rendering exclusively. BG2 supports hardware acceleration so the FoW can be made not to look like your mums arse, but it will by default.
Even as an old fart who played games in the 90's with fog of war I have no idea how anybody ever thought that shit looked acceptable. I'm sure there are a hundred better tricks to simulate line of sight that that.
>>320824358
Yeah, everyone talks this game up so much, and I used to like games like Arcanum and Diablo, so I'm keen for an immersive RPG with lots of options and items and all. It doesn't matter so much that the game's old; I just want it to look relatively good. I mean, I never got black blocky shadwows playing Diablo, which is about the same era iirc.
This is what the demo movie looks like. All spastic colours.
>>320824027
>it looks like a headache
>Install BG1
>Install Tales of the Sword Coast
>Patch it with latest patch
>Install BG2
>Install Throne of Bhaal
>Patch it with latest patch
>Download Baldur's Gate Trilogy
>Extract into BG2 Folder
>Run Setup-BGT.exe
>Follow instructions of what it says
>Run the game after its finished
Could not be simpler
So I just installed fresh, and this is what it looks like. Maybe this really is how it's meant to be?
>>320824714
no m8 just do what this anon says >>320824660
and run it in the bg2 engine
>>320824660
>Download Baldur's Gate Trilogy
Ok smarty pants. I'm going to order a pizza and try. I just wanted my game to work without fiddling!
>>320824714
Definitely not.
>>320825180
>>320824714
>640x480
Whats with the shit resolutions? Pump that shit up to 800x600
>>320825180
Oh wow. So mine's definitely got something wrong with it.
I've tried a fresh install and patched, and now... pic related.
>>320824856
Be aware that if you do that, some things about the game are going to change. Charm will not work as intended, and you will have a summoning cap for instance.
It's your call. Although if you can't find a solution for that glitch it might be worth it.
>>320825596
Pirate the GOG version, man.
>>320825639
The benefits definitely outweight all of that, though.
Better resolutions
Better UI
Pausing in inventory screen
Dualwielding
More classes
All that shit.
OK!!! I think I fixed it. The solution was to switch it to bit in the in game graphics menu, and turn on all the BLT stuff. That seems to have fixed the weird blocky shadows.
http://blog.yimingliu.com/2008/04/16/baldurs-gate-1-graphics-glitch-and-disabling-nvidia-hardware-acceleration/
had the answer. I hope this is fixed and I dom't run into any more issues.
>>320826408
>Pausing in inventory screen
This one I wouldn't really call a benefit. In BG the game unpausing if you open the inventory was fully intentional, encounters were designed around it. I don't really mind that they changed it in 2, but the ability to change around gear mid-combat makes 1 trivially easy.
>tfw playing baldurs gate as a glorious cleric warrior with dual morning stars
>get to baldurs gate
>pc explodes, try to recover data
>corrupted
I want to die
>>320826495
Consider upgrading to the BG2 engine with TuTu or Baldur's Gate Trilogy anyway. It makes for a much better overall experience.
Also Wild Mages.
>>320826495
Glad it worked out. Have fun with the game, anon.
>>320826687
How the fuck did it explode?
>>320826708
I might do. I'll see how I like the game as it is first.
>>320826745
Thanks, dude! Not that I have much time to play now though :( Been working 16 days straight, and tomorrow is my only day off till christmas day, I have to do my christmas shopping then.
But damned if I'm not going to get stuck into this game for a few hours each night!!
I SERVE THE FLAMING FIST
