I honestly have to say it is. I'm not even a big fan of it (or other anime fighters, game play wise. They're not bad, I just like muh footsies and ground game) mechanically, but it's fucking eye candy, and probably my favorite fighter to watch, for a combination of that, and the fact it is a really good fighter, just not one I like playing.

Never actually played much GG, bit the only other "anime" fighter I ever got into competitively was Mahvel, which was basically "short moments of slowly walking back and forth on the ground, before spending the rest of the round playing 'The floor is lava' once the match gets going in high gear". I always use this video as an example of footsies, neutral, and spacing because it's actually very easy to see those here. Check out the match, especially the 1st round.

Notice the spacing and neutral of the Sol. Just enough spacing to see if Jam is going to airdash so that he can bust out his anti-air normal. Footsies as well, that Jam can't even try to attack back. Pretty basic.

Wow, you're right. While they're both being aggressive as hell, there's still a very strong ground game going on, and most Ariel maneuvers seem to be fake outs, or just distance covering. Even the one combo at the end, which was pretty big, was nowhere near marvel level.

I'm actually interested now. Didn't this just come to PC? I might check it out. Any good crash courses/tutorials, for someone decently experienced with fighters, and just looking for the specific mechanics/methods of this game, and not "up is jump. Back is block."?

There isn't. People just don't realize that lobbies are full so they assume the game isn't active. When I make a lobby, it fills up fairly quickly. Most people are too lazy to make a lobby when they don't get anything.

There's an extremely in-depth tutorial in-game for learning.

Guilty Gear takes advantage of the fact that its identity in that there's an air-footsie game where you're trying to catch a hit and confirm it into a combo. The fundamental is the same as the ground game, in that you can dash to cover distance but become vulnerable, block while in the air, read into grabs and whatever.

Do the tutorial first. Relatively speaking, Guilty Gear is execution light and technical heavy. The amount of universal mechanics you need to hammer in is pretty annoying to be honest, Danger Time is reviled by pretty much everyone but on a personal level, there're a lot of mechanics I wish they'd simplified or cut around myself.

You really don't need to do much practice to get simple combos down. The game's much more lenient than Street Fighter if you're coming from there and most characters don't need to bother with links if you can chain. Ky, Sol, Faust, Sin and Elphelt are the recommended beginner characters but I honestly think it's fine to start learning with whoever you like. Maybe avoid Slayer and Potemkin who require a lot of game knowledge.

I wouldn't be afraid of jumping online quickly after tutorials and some challenge matches. The community right now has a lot of new players, and again the execution is forgiving.

That's the issue. They should've covered up those low-texture rocks with something more stylistic to hide the imperfections. Xrd does this really well. It's running on an older engine and made on a smaller engine yet looks prettier because the devs realized what the limitations are and designed after that. The lightning in some SFV stages is pretty good though.

Watching match videos of top players for your character is also helpful. If you want short term progress, you could just try to emulate whatever they do.

Guilty Gear Xrd blew me away. It's the only fightan game I've played that teaches you how to play the game, which it does through challenges. Then in online, the lobby system is sweet: you join a room with up to ?? slots and then you can play/watch/wait at four virtual arcade machines. As far as mechanics go, I like that they got rid of some of the "I gotta grind this in training mode" by killing FRC, but changes the roman cancel mechanics to keep it deep while introducing Blitz Shield. Only new mechanic I'm not sure about is Danger Time, which always feels silly... but it's Guilty Gear.


AND of course the graphics are beautiful. They did the 3D looking 2D thing perfectly by carefully using cell-shading but by editing the normal maps, scaling parts of the models during animations, and I forgot what else.

Even if you don't like rushdown, air-dashing, anime, combos, etc., GGXrd is setting the bar for fighting game features.

Yeah the lobby system is pretty fucking good. It's such a huge step from USF4 which was barebones as fuck. And somehow, I doubt SFV will have better lobby system. I just don't get that impression playing the beta. The fact that you can actually type and communicate with others is a plus.

I'm not sure what you're struggling with and I'm not a good I-No player, so I'll tell you a bit about I-No from my impression of her when I was a completely new player.

If you as a new player are struggling with execution I feel like it's good to focus on being able to to things consistently. For example if you hit an opponent with a dashing j.S, instead of following it up with an optimized combo like j.S>6P>5H>IAD>j.K>j.S>j.VCL>HCL~follow up>oki it's better to just go j.S>6P>5H>HCL~follow up>oki. I think I-No is the kind of character that might give new players a headache when they see high level tech with her, like her crazy j.D FD cancel for extremely tricky mixups and they might feel like they need to be able to do all that stuff to play her. You have to start slowly with her.

I-No is all about scoring a knockdown and taking all the momentum for yourself. I'm sure you know how good the music note is. You want to get your opponent to block it and fly in since I-No generally has to commit to risky approaches if she just flies on in. HCL YRC is also a really good tool and if you hit with it you can often get a big combo afterwards, but if you're not feeling confident about that then try HCL YRC>air dash>j.S>j.H>HCL~follow up.

Here are a few things I found helpful. If your opponent is staying back a lot feel free to just fire away notes until they block one of them. If they are staying grounded at mid range and are constantly attempting to prevent you from flying in with pokes and projectiles then bring out horizontal chemical love to score a knockdown or use stroke the big tree to go under and low profile their stuff. If they are reversal happy and like to DP a lot when you are flying towards them after knocking them down then flying in and use a j.VCL YRC and block their DP.

That being said, I'm no authority on GG and I'm certain that there are other players here that could give you a lot better advice.

In the situation with the sin player he could have used 6P. A fast normal with decent range like Sin's 5S would most likely have worked as well. When it comes to Slayer's slash move (f.S I'm guessing) then the situation is a bit different since that one is +6 frames on block. A decent way to deal with it is to use faultless defense. Since it causes extra push back you would black on or two of Slayer's f.S and then he would whiff the next one.
