He was really more the Hylden champion, as he was instrumental in freeing them. But not wholly. Both Kain and Raziel played their parts in their freeing, but Raziel more so.
To put things in perspective, look at the appearance of both Kain and Raziel. Both Kain and Raziel share traits of both races; Kain looks far more hylden while havin a vampiric look to him while Raziel has the blue look of the vampires but body shape of a Hylden.
