I don't see the problem. Roles are chosen and altered by stats in different ways in each of these games. Whether it be by level up, party members, or equipment, you choose your role and play it as you please, for the most part.

You see, fire emblem does in fact have a leveling system and combat based on statistics! This makes is an RPG. However, it has another element to it, a board! You move your units like little chess pieces, thus strategy!
So we call fire emblem a "Strategy" rpg.
Next is KH, it also uses damage based on numbers, and leveling up, so RPG. However you dont wait for turns, combat is a constant fluid thing. So its actionny. Action rpg!

Honestly the whole RPG classification system is retarded. What exactly are the requirements for a game to be considered an RPG, anyway? It definitely doesn't have anything to do with role playing. And most of the subgenres are equally retarded - "JRPG" and "WRPG" only describes the place of origin and doesn't say anything meaningful of the game's contents. Likewise, "computer RPG" doesn't mean anything. I'd be in favour of a proper classification system that defined the characteristics that make up the subgenres.

These days a game only really needs a level up system for it to be considered an RPG. It's dumb, but it's the way it is, unfortunately. If you want a REALLY deep RPG, why not add in a skill tree for some extra pizazz?
I think the problem is "RPG" doesn't actually mean what it stands for. It really means games where characters grow in stats through gaining experience, collect equipment and explore. We probably should think of a better name sometime soon.
