The Hunters, Antlion Workers, and Zombines are so much better than any enemy in HL1

I don't know, I'd say Episode 1 managed to be worse. Blue Shift was still your basic Half Life formula, it just didn't do anything interesting with it. Episode 1 was worse because it decided that shooting should be optional in a first person shooter.

Well, I agree with the list at least, though I'd say EP2 is roughly equal to HL2, rather than outright better.

- Good level design. Good enemy placement and pacing. Really clever parts like Surface Tension where you start at one point and go the long way around to reach the same place -- Half Life actually often gives you a glimpse of what's to come this way. It's a small thing but I really appreciate it, I see a kind of subtle humor in it. I don't know, it's hard to explain.

- Fantastic claustrophobic atmosphere. You feel like a hunted rat all throughout. It's all smoke and mirrors and scripted sequences, but it doesn't feel overdone like say, Half Life 2 does. The game is unafraid of quiet moments of just roaming through ugly ducts. In this way, it reminds me more of System Shock 2 than it does of HL2's near constant tryhard spectacle.

- Great sound. By this I don't mean technically -- it's all quite dated, sure. But the way the game is unafraid to make guns extremely loud or the overbearing reverb in metal rooms. I love it, it feels raw.

To sum it up, the game doesn't feel like it's trying to please you, even if it's actually linear and carefully crafted to be intuitive. You can really immerse yourself, which is where I think HL2 fails. It's all over the place, inconsistent in tone and trying too hard to deliver variety at the expense of immersion.

The only real flaw BM had was the shitty marine AI. I mean come on guys, marine AI is one of the best things about HL. Sure, I know they're not really as smart as they appear, but while you're actually playing, they really seem smart and that's all that matters. Just like FEAR AI which is similarly dumb under all the smoke and mirrors.

BM marines are slow dumbsters who are overly accurate to compensate for it. I hope they manage to fix this for the final version.

Otherwise, I was shocked to see BM turn out as good as it did. I was always a naysayer claiming it will never come out.

Why do people like opposing force so much? Don't remember it doing anything better than the other two, but I do remember them clumping up bunches of hit-scan enemies in an area, especially those ninjas, who in groups were tedious to kill.

That's fake god rays, aka shitty post process ones. It's not actual volumetric lighting. With real volumetric lighting you get rays without staring at the source.
