It's fun to blow up buildings, and shoot at giant enemy bugs. It's repetitive, but at the same time it can be challenging and you have dozens of different set-ups and options.
I like the customization, I like the big-open environments that get destroyed over the course of a full-scale battle, and I like the game's design

EDF has always been a dogshit series.
Thing about the games are that they really shine in online coop once you have decent gear.
Otherwise, guns are hilariously unbalanced, enemies are fasters and tougher, later missions go full batshit. I can easily see hating this game if you have to play it solo and don't want to grind for gear.

The game builds upon enemy types to make each mission require different types of tactics. For example ants are best taken out at range, but walker robots will just pester you with shots. Enemy respawn locations, air enemies, friendly troops and vehicle placement all make the situation more complex in their own ways.
The player then has to decide how to best position themselves against the aliens, which to focus first and with what weapons, of which only two can be brought in. Is it better to bring a long range but slow rocket to take out respawn nests at range but have to worry about friendly fire which is usually a 1 hit kill on you, or to bring one with lower accuracy but more rockets and take out a bunch of buildings?
The game steadily increases the amount and variety of enemies, so you never really solve the problem of how to deal with levels similarly to a puzzle game. This all increases the higher a difficulty you play on.
The movement system and reload system also requires situational awareness, as getting hit by enemies will slow or nearly stop you, so target prioritization and where to shoot and movement has to take into account more than just which enemy is most likely to deal the most damage.
