I hate to be that guy, but every poll that people took leading up to the reveal showed King K. Rool as number one, while Bayonetta was always tied up with Sora and others around 9-10.
Do you think it's possible that Sakurai just saw more potential in Bayonetta? She has a game on the Wii U that could use a boost (and could potentially get one through Smash), and she wasn't as expected as well,so she has the element of surprise to hype her up a bit.
Sakurai claimed it would all be fanservice from here, but do you think it's possible that maybe he just picked his favorite choice out of the top 10, and not the actual number 1, most feasible Nintendo/3rd party character from the list?
Also I want to stress that I'm really happy with Bayonetta, but it just seems kind of odd how things ended up. Does this indicate a bigger problem with online polling? Because multiple polls had similar results, and Bayonetta wasn't even in the top 5.

You have to consider that people well outside of Smash's core audience were also able to vote for characters as well, whereas fan polls generally only included core fan favorites.

I don't see how sales is relevant to a character poll where any person can vote for any character they choose. I don't have to have purchased Bayonetta to have voted for her, and the same applies to any other character.

Maybe 1% of Donkey Kong's fans are into K. Rool hardcore. Meanwhile, Bayonetta's charm as a character is 50% of the appeal to the series (with the rest obviously from the game's high quality.) You can't just say "this game sold more, so absolutely everything in it must be more popular." Bayonetta's a cult classic, but she's incredibly well known and popular within the game community.
