The game sucks. The font is small and can't be read from your couch. Your PC is autistic and awkward in conversations. The soundtrack is horrible and cringe inspiring- imagine the horror of weeb rap. The graphics are shit as every sacrifice has been made to have high draw distance. The game doesn't take advantage of vibration and you can walk through enemies so nothing you do in battle has any relatable or satisfying weight to it. Most of the game's dialog isn't even voiced. Just don't bother.

In the affinity chart it says I have one heart with alma and I'm at the right level so I'm confused as to why I can't accept it.

For elma affinity, it may appear full but it isn't compeltely full, fight a bit more, respond to soul voiuce and it should increase to the good amount. Normally i wait to see a sliver in the next heart to be sure.
As for mechanical/archeology/biologival level whenever you get a blade rank, you can speak eleanor right next to the mission billboard. Shell give you 1 level in one you choose. You should get mechanical to 4 first then after that it's yur choice.

Xenoblade Chronicles had a vastly superior story, far more engaging characters with real personalities and made you (as a player) want to continue the game to see the next lines delivered. The areas and music of the game are perhaps the best and most cohesive of any game in history. Stunning scenery with an OST that never, ever could be outdone. It was a story about a proto-god becoming god and then deferring all power.
Xenoblade Chronicles X has a meaningless story that remains unfinished and reverses plotpoints/plotlines at least 3 times in the story. The characters are garbage, to include the affinity missions and sideline quests that reveal any background on any of them. However, it is not a story-focused game, but an exploration-focused game which is does flawlessly. There is so much to explore is will literally take you hundreds of hours to find it all, and impossible without a guide of some sort to 100% complete it. The enemies, while lacking variety, are numerous and challenging in both forms of gameplay which re-uses the predecessor's style and makes it better. It's a story about humans fighting to retrieve their wrecked ship only to discover they'll just have to work with what they have.

It is bigger, but frankly? It didn't need to be. It's...really TOO much. Instead of 1 or 2 beaches with unique monsters and a couple crannies, you get 23 different beaches with the same 3 monsters just at higher levels and a bit of wreckage to find.
In the case of Bionis' Leg, you got a set of ruins that made you go, "huh! What's this, maybe there's something over the cliff's ed----FUCK THAT OHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT!!!" and some watering holes and a field and some mountains and different enemies waiting at different spots. LOTS of varied little locales, most of which had meaning or setting within the story. But XBX? Primordia? It's just a fuckhuge continent that looks 100% the same. I'm 30 hours in and in my opinion the gameplay is worse, simply because the Overdrive mechanic doesn't work as well as Chain attack and doesn't let you set up fun combos, and characters don't have unique arts sets, everyone has more or less the same shit and 2 arts unique to their character. Meanwhile in XC characters like Dunban, Melia and Riki had completely unique mechanics tied to their characters, like how Melia was able to charge up different elements and unload them and then trigger her super mode, which was insanely satisfying.

Forgettable story that gives you the middle finger in the epilogue and underwhealming story missions 75% of the time.

Much better story.
Gives you the ability to go from story mission to story mission without bullshit inbetween.
Good music that is used well all the time.
Million times better cutscenes.
I'd say, if you like JRPGs because you enjoy the narratives, like most jrpg fans do, sometimes even ignoring the gameplay shortcomings, the original is the better game.

While I agree that overdrive is far worse than Chain Attacks, the reason you probably hate it so much is
1. You don't fully understand how to use it; which is LEGIT. It's not fun to use and it's too short so there's no reason to bother until...
2...endgame sets that let you stay in overdrive longer (infinitely). Then, Overdrive is NECESSARY. And, certain sets will ONESHOT even the superbosses. See links below. It's the same build, one is better at showing its prolonged use, is all.
