Dragon Quest Swords. Yep that was my first. Damn good game honestly, aside from the annoying characters (during combat they never stop talking- "wii wii wii mon ami my hero" is embedded in my head) and obtuse menus.
I'm currently playing Dragon Quest V DS, it's pretty great.
I chose Bianca as my wife, but mostly cause the other choices didn't quite make sense in the case of the story- though personal preference considered I probably would have selected her anyway.
I briefly played 8 through emulation, but it was really slow (game play wise) and some cut scenes were fucked up. Is it worth playing on PS2 or just wait for the 3ds version?
How is Heroes by the way? It seems like a competent warriors game with a nice dragon quest coat

I've played IV and V, where should I from here? Would I like VII? The character designs seem really charming to me so I want to get the 3ds version but I heard its pretty rough for those not familar with it. Other then DQ and MOTHER I don't like jrpgs so I'm not really sure what to expect. I know you have grind each class system and don't know how much I'm into that. Thoughts?

The only thing SE has said about localization was that they'll consider DQXI if DQ7 and 8 sell well.

Yup, for the sword gimmick it's relatively well done for a motion control game. You swipe with the remote to swing the sword and you adjust the strike point by pointing and pressing A. Only motion that's kinda bugged is the stab motion.

I played the female one and she had to get the male MC back (and fight him, of course) after he was held hostage by the enemy.
I guess it's safe to assume the story only differs a bit during that part.

I'm actually with you. Been playing Xenobalde X and loving every moment. That being said I love Dragon Quest and say you should really look into the other games. All the games are pretty great and there's really no starting point. If you own a 3DS look into DQ7 or 8 (8 is a bit less insane than 7 which is a fucking beast of game but still my favorite).

I really like 6. Not as much as 5, but the dual-world mechanic was interesting and the final act after you go to the demon world is really good. Main problem with it for me would be the class system feels a bit rigid.
Would you like it if any of the numbered titles' protagonists appeared in Heroes 2? Even if they were silent?

DQ7 personally has a better class system (heard 3DS version did things to it but I don't know what). I think the real problem with DQ6's class system is that you can only get class levels when you fight stronger enemies so you never really feel like the class system works for you.

Improved it tenfold. Seriously, aside from the visuals which are a subjective thing, DQVII 3DS is an objective improvement in every way. The game is much better.

I'm only worried about DQ11 coming over here. I wonder if Nintendo would be willing to pay for publishing it since it's also on the PS4. I mean if SE doesn't want to do either one I can't really see Nintendo taking DQ11 and it would really be an exclusive for the west.

In retrospect, yes. But I always viewed MMOs (as an outsider, as I never got into MMOs) as a vehicle for making a grand multiplayer experience- so it's more about the novelty of the inclusion of a large population in game, so the quests and other aspects were secondary.
As MMOs evolved they became more accessible to appeal to a larger audience, and this attitude reached some kind of singularity that began to sacrifice the mechanics that made players reach out to others for more convenient mechanics, leading to MMOs being able to be played (and encouraged in some aspects) as individuals rather than in groups.
So MMOs kinda caved in on themselves as a result. But that's just my perspective.

I'm interested. Sadly it seem SE doesn't actually care about publishing DQ and it's Nintendo that is taking up the call. So unless DQ7 and 8 are a blowout and change SE mind on DQ we won't see Builders.
