I thought they were generally good.
My only complaint was that since there were so many, we didn't get much meaningful interactions with many of them. A few were more important than others but after recruitment few characters stayed relevant for long.
If I could have it my way, I would have made it so you just recruited 2 full teams the whole game. One full elemental set as Serge and one full elemental set as Lynx.
So like Kid, Glenn, Guile, and others as Serge then Riddel, Viper, Fargo, Harle, Radius, Norris, and others as Lynx. Its still more than CT, but you could build on them more.
Also I dunno if Im in the minority, but I liked the whole "Playing a third of the game as Lynx" bit. It was a neat switch up

To be they're like valkyrie profile's cast, they have indepth stories and ties but dont related that hard to the main story and just here along for the ride
In the end I prefer this style to the kind of shallow but invested characters that we get in most jrpgs, I don't care that much about anime tropes that I need to see them happen yet again. I'd rather have the world building Cross had.

I just felt Chrono Trigger did it better. All the characters were developed pretty well, at least for an SNES era rpg. I felt more connected to them than I did with any of Cross's cast. I mostly just picked my cross party depending on how cool they looked.

Trigger's cast only works because the world is so small, so everything relates to Guardia and it's citizens in one way or another
They were all pretty cool but the character that's supposed to be the common link, Marle, was the worst character so it still felt disjointed to me.

Cross's world isn't that much bigger than Trigger's.
The only real outside thing is Porre trying to invade El Nino.

You could say that but in Trigger Porre is a non-entity, it doesnt really matter, whereas in Cross you have the Viper army and the indigenous cultures of El Nido being at odds already without even adding to it Porre's invasion plan. Tho you're right, it's not that bigger, but still the addition of another group is huge if all you had to work with previously is one group.
Still Cross had a lot of different "factions" that intertwined in some way during the plot, which fit the theme of worlds crossing through each other.
Similarly Trigger's world is mostly the same kingdom across time, so it's structure makes sense. I'm not dissing on Trigger, but I think what Cross tried to do worked and not being like Trigger is not a bad thing.
Tho personal preferences will make you like one better over the other, certainly.

Don't get me wrong, I love both games. I probably like Cross even more. I just wish we could have had more developed allies which just wasn't possible with the companion model they went with.
I suppose my biggest disappointment was just Guile was supposed to be Magus but because of the companion model, they didn't feel it was really possible to build on that.

Well, I know that was the intention and it was building on Radical Dreamers, but in my personal headcanon I like the idea of Serge being some kind of Magus offshoot similar to how Kid is a Saria clone. It just fits better to me and there's nothing in the game contradicting it, especially since that one Luca letter feels more connected to the plot if you have this assumption.
