I don't know man. The people who think AC should have continued down that path, seems like the same kind of people who measure the worth of an open world game by the size of its map.
For all its technical flaws and boring story, Unity actually did one smart thing, which was rethinking the mechanics. It reworked the tools so they were all useful and balanced the weapons out so there were pros and cons to the loadout you chose.
Syndicate fucked it up by casualizing it again, giving you a weapon selection that doesn't matter and just makes you pick whichever one you think is the prettiest, Introduced a gang mechanic that barely works and definetly isn't as cool as the one in Brotherhood AND they added the grappling hook which is convenient, but goes against the very core design of the series.
If they'd spend half as much time iterating on the good things about Unity, as they had on making Syndicate progressive and P.C, it could have been an amazing entry into the franchise, rather thank and "okay" one.
Personally my interest in the series plummeted when they killed off desmond, and the modern day story line along with him. I know you play an abstergo agent in a couple games after, but it's all first person, and the modern day story is minimal at best. And it was dumb you could hack computers out of order. Like in blackflag, one of the first 5 computers I hacked I got an audio recording of the main boss in the building saying they might kill me after I finish the work for them. And I go back to work like nothing happened at all
