It depends on the game. I assume you're referring to the backlash from Fallout 4 introducing a voiced protag. It's different in a game with deep character customization and light backstory so you can theoretically create whatever type of hero you like. While a series like Witcher where you don't create your own hero, but it isn't any less of an RPG because Geralt has a voice and a history.
