It's fantastic. The combat is the best that I've ever seen in a JRPG.
The music is comfy as fuck, the story, although bizzare, is fairly interesting.
The atmosphere is great.
Sure, it's unpolished as all hell and it has flaws, but given the proper budget and more time for development, it could have been a real jewel.

It's a shame that one of the best garbs is the grossest looking costume in the game. Soldier of Peace is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. It's also disappointing that they blatantly cut/paste certain elements of a garb into another one.
The questing, combat, etc. are great but it really bothers me that I can't get a stable framerate in the Wildlands. I am playing it on the console though.

The atmosphere is really unique, the calm music and the relaxed npcs contrast really well with the themes and story. I just think there is too much "joke" garbs in the game.

XIII is awful. XIII-2 seemed like it could be fun, but its port to PC was garbage, so it was probably good on the PS3. LR seems to actually, unbelievably, have a stable port. It's also kind of fun.
People were probably giving you shit because they only played XIII, which is completely correct. Awful, awful game, whose only redeeming factor was the fact it spawned the other two.
I'm about 15 hours into the first FFXIII game and all this talk about LR is making me very concerned about whether or not it is going to be total shit.
Seriously, what is this, some kind of dress-up simulator? I'm afraid the sequels are going to destroy everything I like about FFXIII.

It's XIII, but instead of swapping between three characters you swap between three skill sets. Each skill set is based on the outfit you wear.
It still basically boils down to the paradigm system in that you want to stagger the enemy, and then hit them hard with your damage outfits, while debuff/buffing where necessary.
It's a bit faster paced because there are regularly no menus involved in the combat. It also doesn't hold your hand for the first 30 hours, which was a major problem with XIII.

I heard the bosses get much stronger after day 7 and considering the rough time i had with noel i certainly don't want that to happen, also can i upgrade my gear in any way? Red mage outfit is too awesome to not use constantly.

Nah man I've been defending them here the last few years too (and at the 1UP boards prior to that). The original game had some significant shortcomings, but I felt the combat, story, and to a lesser extent the graphics and music more than made up for them. The sequels got progressively better IMO, to the point that LR was tied with Bayo 2 for my GOTY last year. I never bothered with the PC ports though. If I want to play them again I'll do so on PS3.
If only Lightning was attractive. The amount of cute costumes in this game and the flashy combat is tempting me to start the FFXIII trilogy, but Lightning being ugly as fuck is a pretty big dealbreaker.
