If a weapon has a grade in two different stats, does its total damage base on both of those stats? I have primarily a STR build but I've gotten so high that I need to level it up twice to see any ATK change. I was thinking about pumping stats into SKL. Will that provide an actual damage boost?

quality builds in bb are either str leaning or skl leaning because majority of the weapons are either a variant of C/D, B/D or D/C, D/B.
There are two softcaps for damage stat scaling. The first is 25, the second is 50. Therefore, giving the amount of levels a person typically wants to spend before they feel satisfied, the general ideal is to put your preferred damage stat to 50 and your second preferred to 25.
In the context of quality, this means you either want to go 50/25 str/skl or 25/50 str/skl. Each have their own ideal weapons and each have their own pros and cons.
Look at a list of weapons and their scaling at +10. If you like more that have C/D scaling, go str leaning, otherwise go skl leaning.

People say the axe is the best beginner starting weapon but in my opinon the cleaver is. They're both fairly equal, but the strength of the axe is incredible range and damage in transformed mode with a busted R2 and super good rally/regain per hit. The cleaver is just more forgiving, has a mostly vertical moveset with good range in transform mode, an R2 followup in it that pancakes, and you can use your gun regardless of mode. The differences between pistol and blunderbuss arent substantial enough to say which id recommend but the blunderbuss is more forgiving with being able to hit the parry/stagger, but has terrible damage and range while the pistol does more damage, has less endlag, and more range (the damage bit is really useful for dealing with dogs since shooting them is an auto knockdown.)

I personally started with the axe, too. Moreso than build, learn to abuse the reach and damage of the poleaxe alt form. Another big thing that I didn't even really get down until I was near the final boss was using the pistol to stun right as an enemy attacks and go in for the visceral.
For build, make sure to get your stamina up. Getting Endurance to 20 or so will make a world of difference due to your ability to really chain a combo together. There seem to be more weapons earlier on that are STR based so put into that before you worry about SKL. VIT is nice but it's a crutch. Most things are gonna fucking kill you in 2-3 hits anyway, so it's better to get your timing down for dodge and parry.

There's constant slowdown whenever you keep moving around and the game loads more enemies. The only way to not have it lag is stick in one area, if you progress you're going to see tons of lag.

you can however circumvent this if you know what you're doing
I start the DLC within the first few hours of a new playthrough by doing the following
start game
get weapon to +3
kill blood starved beast
rush hemwick to get weapon to +6
kill vicar
run through the first two depths of pthumeru
reach depth 3 pthumeru and farm the layer 1 boss a few times for %18 gems
start playing the DLC at <BL45 less than three hours into a fresh new character with adequate damage
