Is the action-platformer a dead genre?
Any modern ones you'd recommend?
Azure Striker Gunvolt is pretty gud
Mega Man X was the peak of the genre

It's mediocre. Tedious repetitive combat, horrible level design, and atrocious writing.

i'm guessing the physics/movement make up for it?

Not really. Movement upgrades are pretty lacking and there are many areas where you have to go in circles to get around because of the way areas are set up. For example, there's several locations where if you jump from a high area you can land on a ledge with a chest on the way down, and there's 2-3 chests to get on different ledges, and you can only get one at a time, so you have to climb back up each time.

Freedom Planet is pretty hype.

It sucked.

You already posted the best recent one aside from Gunvolt.
Seriously, A.R.E.S. is pretty good, a solid 8.
Gunvolt's really fucking fun too.
Whoever said Vladis Story is shilling, it's pretty lackluster.
